Laptop DVD Rom - DVD Media Compatibility +/- ?

Hi, I am planning to buy a DVD Writer just after Christmas which in its
self would not appear to be too difficult but I have one problem.

I have read about the DVD+/- options and it would appear to make sense to
spend out on a duel Drive. This however will create another problem. Long
term, the end of next year maybe, I want to buy a laptop with a DVD/CD-RW
Combo drive included.

This is standard on most laptops now but I cant find information about what
types of DVD media it will run? By the time I buy a laptop, I will have
many months worth of DVD media in storage with lots of files ready to be
read in the laptop but which do I choose to burn?

If I choose to use DVD+ then the Laptop only recognises DVD-, I would have
to burn all my media on fresh media, a cost I dont wish to consider. The
same is if I use DVD- as my main media type, the laptop may only recognise
DVD+.

I don't want to keep bouncing from DVD+ to DVD- all the time as I would
still be left high and dry with some media not being playable. What little
I think I do know is that DVD- is used more in stand-a-lone DVD Players (Or
is that DVD-R?) you plug in to your TV set? Is DVD+ more for PC DVD Rom
drives?

When reading up on DVD media it says 'Most DVD Rom drives will run this
media but 'Most' is not very helpful.

So any information would be appreciated. I don't favour either + or -
media I just want to ensure I pick the right DVD type that will run in a
laptop when I buy it.

Thanks.
