Hi I had a working machine with a 3.2gb IDE hard drive on the primary and a
Sony DVD rom on the secondary. I removed the Sony drive and since then I've been getting the error 1790 Disk 0 error. The BIOS now detects it as a 2110mb drive and if I tried booting to DOS from floppy fdisk says it can't talk to the fixed disk. There is no way of setting the disk up in the F10 setup and I have no other setup disks what do I need to do to get it to change the drive settings. Reply to group or email lid (remove invalid) |

Do I need to download something ie "softpaq" from HP to set the hard drive parameters - how does this differ from the F10 setup I can already access. All F10 does is list the drive under IDE Devices with the incorrect parameters and size and I can't change them it just says press any key to continue. Will this "softpaq" allow me to change the settings back so my os will load again. |

Do I need floppies I need 3 floppies (damn I'm going to have to buy a box!) according to this post http://tinyurl.com/cd9vz a user was getting the same error trying to install a 20gb drive. He booted from setup floppy discs and was able to enter the hd parameters into the BIOS it then saw it as 8.4gb but the 1790 error was gone and it worked as 20gb. Question is will Computer Setup/VP and PC Diagnostics allow me to enter hd parameters where F10 setup will not. Aha the clue is on the HP support page "* » perform regular maintenance » upgrade and migrate » recycle and dispose support resources » Purchase Support Software CDs » Subscribe: Driver/Software/Support Alerts & Notifications » Microsoft DirectX Information » View All Desktops Products * » contact support » discussion groups » frequently asked questions * » manuals » parts information * » subscribe to notifications » warranty information » IT professionals * » developers » help » site map Computer Setup/VP and PC Diagnostics version 1.76 A * (27 Aug 98) »*revision history Aha the clue is on that HP support page "For all products except the Deskpro EP, SB, and EN Series, Computer Setup and PC Diagnostics are both pre-installed on the Diagnostics Partition. Both utilities can be run by pressing F10 during power-up or reboot when prompted in the lower right corner of the screen on some models or when the cursor jumps to the upper right corner of the screen on other models." It goes on... "For the Deskpro EP, SB, and EN Series, Computer Setup/VP and Personal Computer Diagnostics must be run from diskette." Which would suggest for everything except Deskpro EP, SB & EN you can access the Computer Setup/VP and Personal Computer Diagnostics via F10. Those utilities are probably the key to setting the HD parameters. How did it lose them in the first place BIOS battery is ok. |

Probably upgraded then handed down to use as an Internet PC. The DVD Rom and Monitor are going in my neices PC that's why I removed the DVD Rom - I never expected to lose the HD parameters when it updated configuration. The PSU is Compaq PS2013 series p/n 334112-001 200w. I am charging my digital camera's batteries and will upload some photos of the ATX connector to a webserver later. Its 00:50 here I should be in bed! Gotta get round my nieces tommorow. |

I put the 6.8gb in and tried formatting but it quickly reported "trying to recover lost allocations" I couldn't be bothered to wait for it to finish so I tried a 2.1gb and formatted it at about 97% it said "trying to recover lost allocations" so I left it 20mins and it completed format. I then installed Windows 2000 successfully however this 2.1gb hard drive only powers up 1/3 times (you can hear it) and the power on button on the case isn't making a consistent connection with the switch so its hard getting it on - that with the hard drive problem is bad. I think I`ll just leave it on lol that would be best I think :) |

WOW A new hard drive? :D For SP4 in win2k... try nlite and do a win2k installation cd with sp4 in ;) Its not worth a new hard drive for this PC - my friend may have another 2.1gb which *might* be clear of errors. I will probably run a thorough scandisk again to automatically fix errors and to scan for and try to recover bad sectors - even though Win98SE boot disk format did this before installation. Seriously a good program to use is Bart's Disktool... I got it on a boot cd rom somewhere around here. ok... it's the same... a low level format with check after it... I got sick of the 2.1gb which would spin up maybe 1 in 10 times (if lucky) so I low level formatted that 10.2gb with the track 0 error after I did a non destructive test and it stopped straight away with 20 errors. So its definetely cream crackered my friend also gave me a 1.2gb Western Digital so I booted to dos and formatted it no errors. I then ran Ghost and copied the Windows 2000 install from the 2.1gb to the 1.2gb and am using that now. 144mb free space lol with Windows 2000 (no service pack) and IE6sp1 + messenger 7.0. |

Did I have some hassle trying to ghost it though. I had a boot cd with Ghost on it (but no copy command) and a boot floppy setup for networking support (ie no Ghost program or copy command etc). I had to disconnect the 2.1gb connect the 1.2gb to primary with the CD Rom on the secondary and boot from cd. The 1.2gb had a FAT32 partition already on it with Windows 98 installed. So I changed directory to c:\windows\system and used the move command to move r:\ghostpe.exe to c:\ Then I booted from floppy and used the move command to move c:\ghostpe.exe a:\ Then I connected both the 2.1gb & 1.2gb and during a power on where the 2.1gb actually spun up I booted from floppy and ran Ghostpe |

I was lucky that the 1.2gb had a previous Windows98 installation. |

I can usually get the system on with the power button but I have more difficulty getting it off. Its a peice of crap really I haven't got any case screws and the CD Rom isn't properly aligned to the front of the case. Plus the floppy has lost is eject button so there's just a hole there now lol. Oh well it'll do for my Internet purposes while my other PCs are unavailable. |

Searched google found that by enabling APM mode the PC now shuts down instead of displaying the "Its now safe to turn off your computer" its installed as a standard PC all the other PCs I ever came across that shutdown automatically were installed as ACPI Pcs under Computer in device manager. I didn't know enabling APM would allow a standard PC to shutdown (I guess this motherboard has ACPI features but for some reason they weren't detected during installation) anyone know why ? |

... I only use Partition Magic It is the best and the Industry standard If just 2.1 GIG A dos 6 #1 Disk is also good fdisk is free and I downloaded Win98se bootdiscs from www.bootdisk.com ages ago which include CD support and fdisk/format etc but not copy! I then created a bootcd using this floppy as a template and added ghostpe to it (as you have at least 650mb on cd). The bootcd boots like a floppy and the basic system commands are available at a:\ the rest of the files added to the cd are available at r:\ (the assigned letter for the CD Rom). I prefer using a cd to boot as many of the systems I build I don't buy a floppy (which can be a pain sometimes). The network boot floppy I used was created through the Ghost program under windows. I deleted the networking files to free space and copied the ghostpe program to it. I used the tools a had to hand rather than go on the net to create the perfect boot disk. |
