Compaq Evo Desktop D500

How do I take the cover off, damage-free? There are two recessed clips on
the sides, but are there specific screws that need to be removed, or
anything else required? Thanks

Nope. Should slide forward a bit, then lift up.

Push in the clips and slide the cover forward and up. Drives tilt up
toward the front.
