Compaq Laptop - delete System Save Partition?

I have a Compaq 1800XL1 with two partitions; Local Disk (C:) and System Save
(D:). The D: partition takes up about 2.3G of HD space. Can I safely delete
the D: partition and thus free up more HD space?

HH October 6th 03 04:45 AM

No such animal as an 1800XL1. 1800XL180? XL181? XL190? Anyway, leave it if
you want to use the Recovery CD to do a full Restore.

I have a Presario 1800XL1. Why do you say there isn't such an animal?
Anyway, I've never had the need to do a system restore. The laptop
originally came with Windows 95 which I upgraded to ME. I'd rather make good
use of the extra HD space. Will I be shooting myself in the foot by deleting
this partition?

Aha! I see it. It's an 1800T-XL1. I listed all the North American 1800XL,
not the 1800T-XL series models produced by Compaq. Anyway, if you have no
need to ever do a restore, and you do not need the Compaq driver folders, go
ahead.

There most certainly is a 1800XL1. I've had one for 3.5 years now.
Get your facts straight.

Yes, you can delete that partition. I repartitioned my hd into 5
partitions. I've never had to use the restore disk(have heard that
many time they do not work and that don't surprise me) but most likely
it will repartition to the factory settings.

I beg to differ. There is an 1800T-XL1, a CTO (configure to order), but no
1800XL1.In fact there are 4 models of 1800T-XL1, the 450, 500, 600 and 650.
Also there are also other models of 1800T-XLs, the XL2 and XL4. I make every
effort to get my facts straight. I suggest you do the same before
criticizing others.

Useful or not, he's *wrong* about the 1800XL1. I have had this laptop for 3
or 4 years now and I should know what I own. The laptop plainly says
1800-XL1 on the model/serial number tag. This is ridiculous. Perhaps you'd
like to argue next about what model car I own :)

HH makes the youthful mistake sometimes of unquestioned belief in what
something says on a printed page somewhere, and then arrogantly slapping down
folks with it.
As with "always" and "never", these beliefs get you into trouble and error more
times than not. And doesn't help make new friends...

Also, I had a Compaq tech one insist I had slots in my PC that I did not, so
some certainly do make mistakes, so, while HH is very helpful, he's not the
Pope sharing infallible direction.

Currently he is one of the most helpful, but that's relative, as he is a rather
recent participant, and many before him have been as, if not more, helpful,
over the past six years or so, and without the attitude...

Here is a portion of a Compaq Support question I submitted to them
about 3 years ago regarding the model of my laptop:
---------
Thank you for using Compaq E-support; it is our pleasure to assist
you.
Based on your inquiry here is a solution for your problem.

I understand that you would like to know what is the specific model of
your unit. According to your serial number, your model unit is an
1800XL1.
---------

Case Closed!

Suggest you get onto HP support and have them correct their mistakes

Searching on 1800XL1 returns a direct hit i.e.:
http://h20015.www2.hp.com/en/product.jhtml?
lc=en&pagetype=compaqpres95408&submit.y=9&submit.x =7&cc=us

1800T also returns a direct hit.

But 1800T-XL1, 1800T-XL2 and 1800T-XL4 don't return any direct hits.

HH October 7th 03 09:23 PM

I use the Compaq Consumer TechInfo database, which used to be available on
the Internet, but no longer is. I got a copy on CD from contacts at Compaq.
All Pesario 1800 CTO units have a T suffix before the model; however, all
of this has nothing to do with the original poster's query regarding the
System Sav partition on the HD, so I will make no further comments on the
model number aspect.

DEJ57 October 8th 03 04:20 PM

It's not really confidential,

Right. Doubt Compaq sees it that way.
My experience with Compaq is that anything not in the public (published) is
confidential, and doubt that current or former employees are encouraged to pass
them around. Compaq went to the extreme of putting such information under
court protective order in the class action suit.
Might want to keep a lower profile over your having that data base CD and your
use of it. Really doesn't mean squat to me, but just an interesting
observation....

Dale

HH October 8th 03 10:39 PM

Compaq had it out on the Internet (I posted a link to it in the FAQ I repost
weekly on this NG) for quite a while, so I doubt seriously that Compaq views
its content as "confidential." So, I really do not care if anyone knows I
have it.

Deleting the partition alone will not free up any disk space. It
would simply become unallocated space which would not be available
for use as is. If you want to keep the partition, you can reformat
it and it would still be D:. If you want to incorporate it into the
C: partition, you would need software such as Partition Magic or
something similar to do so.

I have Partition Magic. My question was would it be advisable to take over
the space of the current D: partition to use for something else. Thank you.

One obvious, but mot mentioned word of caution here, is if your 1800 is like
my 1200, Compaq didn't give you any restore media to reinstall Windows 98
SE. The Recovery CD is basically an Emergengy Boot Disk, and if the
System_save partition isn't there intact, you can't do a restore to the
factory state.

I read for some models Compaq had made a CD set available to restore the the
OS in case of a major meltdown (for mine they told me I'd have to send it
back to them).

One way around this is to copy the whole original partition to a network
drive, or burn all the files to a couple of CD's (make sure to maintain the
file/folder structure). One thing to note, if you used the System Save
feature, there will be a large file in the root directory of D: named
system.sav. You don't have to include this file in your archive set to to a
full restore to the factory set. Since you said your D: partition was 2.3 GB
I'm guessing you used the backup feature at least once, since the 98SE
package will fit in about 1.1 GB.

I've used both these techniques successfully on my 1200 XL 118.
