Burner Issues
 

I have two burners: a Pioneer 107D DVD-RW (+&-) and a Yamaha CDW-F1E CD-RW.
Both are on the secondary IDE channel with the Pioneer the master and the
Yamaha the slave. Both are using the latest firmware.

I have encountered two issues however ...

1) If I burn a CD (using CD-RW media) with the Pioneer drive, the disk will
not be recognized by the Yamaha drive. However, the Pioneer will recognize
Yamaha-burned CD-RWs without a problem.

2) I'm using an older version of Nero Burning ROM (version 6.3.1.6), If I
update it my system gets very sluggish after burning an CD image file with
the Yamaha.

Any insights are greatly appreciated. TIA

Are you talking about CDRW discs burned using InCD?

No, I'm referring to mastered CDs, not packet written. I don't even have
InCD installed.

Don't use CD-RW

Might it be a media problem? I don't know the Yamaha, but I assume
you're using Ultra Speed media in the Pioneer. The same blanks in a
drive made for High Speed blanks may not be written well enough to read
easily.

Yes, they are ultra speed 24X CD-RWs, although both drives are designed to
handle them. But as you say, they may not be written well enough to read
from different drives. I will try non-ultra speed media, thanks.

Just wondering,. is there any sort of testing utility that can evaluate the
recording performance of a CD/DVD burner? - something that can make the
distinction between a failing drive and simple media incompatibility? It
seems like the standards for a quality burned disc are fairly arbitrary. Is
there anything close to a universal media formulation that should play on
any drive?

Yes, it's called CDR, RW discs are well known for these problems. BTW, if
you are using Memorex 24x RW media, that's the trouble. Made by Infodisc,
they are some of the worst media ever made.

What about the best formulation - dye type? In the past I have found Taiyo
Yuden Cyanine (Type 1) to be the most compatible for CD-Rs, agree? And what
about DVD-Rs? Is there a similar dye type with the best drive
compatibility?

I'm using Verbatim DataLife Plus - I never trusted Memorex for media.

You need the right hardware and software to go with it. Some LiteOn
drives can unofficially be used for disc testing together with Nero's
checking software (it used to be called CDSpeed but I think it has a new
name now).

The only manufacturer supported affordable test solutions are the
Plextor Premium, PX712 or PX716 drives in conjunction with the Plextools
program that comes with these drives. These will show low level error
rates, jitter and pit/land distribution on recorded discs together with
focus and tracking errors on blank discs.

Taiyo Yuden CD-R's seem to be the most compatible discs in my
experience. I haven't had any compatibility problems with Verbatim discs
that were down to the discs themselves either but I've not used anything
like as many recordable DVD's as I have CD's.
