CAUTION - nVida GeForce 6600 GT & Forceware 9x.xx Drivers

MSI 648Max SiS motherboard
GeForce 6600GT AGP 256mb
WinXP Pro SP2
DirectX 9.0c

Forceware 93.71
Latest version of Windows Media Player (WMP), Realplayer, Quicktime

PROBLEM:
I do not often play videos using players, in fact until 2 weeks ago, I
hadn't played videos for years.

Two weeks ago I tried to play video I brought from work and found that
ALL my media players locked up. WMP locked up my system so bad I had
to hard-reset. I got Quicktime to work by setting "Safe Mode."

This was a problem with the interface of Forceware, DirectX, and the
players. All my games (Oblivion, Far Cry, Splinter Cell series, Doom
3, Quake 4, etc.) worked just fine, no video problems.

I contacted nVidia and finally got a fix, quote.....

"Please install the driver version 84.21, which is the most
compatible driver for GeForce 6600GT graphics card."

This fix (Forceware 84.21) did, in fact, fix my media player problem.
All my players work as they should.

There is a reason why I listed my motherboard above. nVidia's KB had
an entry stating that their 6x.xx drivers, for the 6600, on MSI SiS
AGP motherboards had a problem and provided a fix driver. Looks like
Forceware 9x.xx drivers MAY have the same problem.

Have you tried the latest SiS AGP GART drivers? Often you have to reinstall
the GART driver after a video card driver update:

Thanks, but I have a MSI motherboard with SiS chipset. It is not an
SiS manufactured motherboard. The site you gave is for drivers for
their motherboard. The SiS AGP driver on my system is from Microsoft,
but I'll check them for any updated version.

Thanks for the hint.

Er, nope. The link I gave is indeed the GART driver for all SiS chipsets. It
is likely newer than what MSI may have on its own website.

As far as I know SiS doesn't manufacture its own branded motherboards,
unlike Intel or VIA.

1) OPPS, you are correct. SiS makes chipsets.

2) I found out the MSI download page has a [AutoUpdate] tool, WEB
applet actually, that checks my system and lists the latest
downloadable updates.

Turns out you were correct, there was a SiS AGP chipset update listed.
Again THANKS.

Another driver update was for my built-in NIC.
