Disabling SLI on 6800GS
 

I have a 6800GS. A recent driver update seems to have caused the
machine to boot with SLI enabled. Since there's no second graphic card,
this causes a popup saying that the missing graphics card forces SLI to
be disabled on each bootup. Each, because SLI being disabled doesn't
seem to be saved, and it's on again next boot.

It's annoying, so I tried to stop it. The control panel has only one
SLI related part -- and that just shows a link to their Web site (which
clicking the balloon at startup also does). The Web page says a lot
about how to set up SLI, but nothing about how to turn it off. My PSU
can barely run one 6800, and that one card runs Quake 4 decently; I
don't need another. Especially not on my budget.

Searching the help accessed from the control panel doesn't produce any
more information.

This stinks of spam. It looks like the driver update included a
"feature" that nags you incessantly if you have an SLI-capable card but
no second such card until you get one, and which deliberately either
can't be turned off or requires something obscure done to turn it off.

Say it ain't so. And please, someone, tell me how to disable these SLI
notifications! (Other than rolling back the drivers, which Half-Life 2:
Episode One doesn't like, or actually purchasing a new video card.)

This has been mentioned several times before. It is not a case of turning
SLI off, it is a problem with the latest official drivers. A simple registry
fix is:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\NVIDIA Corporation\
Global\MediaCenterTray

NvCplDisableBalloonNotifications = 1 (dword)

Thanks. Sounds like it will fix the nag, but not the underlying problem
(which is that it thinks I should have a 2nd gfx card).

Plugging in your monitor to the card's other output seems to fix it:


As does using the registry change.

As does using the 91.33 beta drivers.

Read the other posts in this group before posting so much redundant info
(yes, including the adware/spam conspiracy). For one thing, the message
appears with SLI-incapable AGP cards, too...

Thanks. Seems cleaner than a registry hack.

As does using the 91.33 beta drivers.

Beta ... ugh. Beta user-mode software is dangerous enough. Beta
kernel-mode software is begging for data loss.

I don't have the time to read high traffic groups thoroughly and
regularly; you'll have to be satisfied that I did a cursory google
search without turning up any information and that I quickly looked for
it, but there was no obvious recent FAQ posting visible in the group's
thread list.

That's especially strange.

Or maybe they're an even juicier target -- maybe they can sell the rest
*one* video card, but they might be able to sell *these* people *two*.

I can confirm that it appears with SLI-capable PCI-E 16 cards, though,
in case nobody had before.

It's rather ironic that you should imply I didn't show someone some
consideration, in response to my irritation at someone being demanding,

None that were evident from glancing at the first page of thread
Subject:s. (You didn't expect me to actually read the threads
themselves, did you, even those with seemingly-unimportant or unrelated
subjects? It's up to posters to use informative subject headings, not
up to the reader to peer into a crystal ball and magically divine which
threads might be relevant but don't, on the surface, look like they
are. Crystal balls are expensive, you know -- over $100 in the local
curio shop. I don't have that kind of cash lying around to spend just
to satisfy some random usenetter's whim about what level of
clairvoyance the posters to some froup ought to have before posting.

Google is your friend. A quick search on this newsgroup for the keyword
"SLI" within the past two months reveals 7 threads on this topic, including
this one.

common three-letter combo before hitting something relevant. Easier to

answering with helpful information. I'm not nVidia tech support. In the end
nobody cares if the card doesn't work for you.

Unfortunately, you also took a demanding tone at one point, for no
obvious reason and without provocation; my previous post had been quite
civil in tone.

It is that to which I objected, not the help.

The card itself works fine. As others noted, the problem is with the
drivers.
