Very interesting and scary on those 6 TB failure rates.

On newegg, the HGST's & WD's both get mostly 4 eggs. Just looking at
models with lots of reviews. But one HGST had about 30% of reviews at 1
egg.

I don't know what the difference is between those drives at home and at
Backblaze.

You have to read the negative reviews. It's surprising how often
customers bitch about things that don't really have much to do with the
quality of the product itself.

Backblaze.

Vibration is probably the main environmental difference. Also, Backblaze
operates their drives 24/7 (of course), so a typical consumer would
probably get more total calendar days of service from a drive than they
do.

Maybe the many more stop/starts at home equal things up some.

1.5TB drives are the worst ones!

Yeah, that was striking when looking at the reviews, that there
were none that hadn't seen lots of people who had had drives die.

I should really have gone for an HGST given the latest backblaze stats,
but didn’t remember to check the previous one and just went for the
Seagate STDT8000300 essentially because it has a 3 year warranty
and the price was very competitive. It will mostly have vast amounts
of stuff that was recorded on the PVR that I haven't got around to
watching yet and likely never will, so even if it does die and Seagate
can't recover the files, its not the end of the world.

I don't know what the difference is between those drives at home and at
Backblaze.

And it is far from clear how much difference that makes failure wise too.
