Overclocking

I have a Compaq Presario 5700N and am wondering about the possiblities
of overclocking this machine. Also it has windows XP installed and
will not restart without pulling out the plug or resetting the surge
protector. And ideas about this. Thanks DKline

Forget about overclocking a 66mHz bus Celeron. Most Presarios do not have
any BIOS adjustment for processor clock or bus speed. As for the restarts,
since the 5700N is a fairly old CTO machine that shipped with Win98 or 98SE,
there may well be some hardware incompatibilities involved with XP. Did you
run the compatibility wizard before upgrading to XP?

Plus, Compaq docs show the max memory for the 5700N is 256 MB or 384MB
depending on configuration. This is totally unacceptable for XP. You would
be far better off going back to 98/98SE.

DKLine,

I just updated an older an older Compaq by placing it in larger case to
allow for better air movement. I discovered I had to use the Compaq's
power switch as the generic one from the case would not work... I guessed
the voltage requirement is different...

Your system was a win98, and since that software has holes the size of Mack
Trucks and is no longer supported by Microsoft... I would suggest using it
as a Linux learning system, maybe using a light weigh Linux Distro... Or
KDE version of Linux...

AntiX "Lysistrata" would be a rapid Light weight distro for your system if
it is not running a AMD K6/K7 -

SimplyMepis 7 is near it final release. Version 6.5.02 was final in April
this year, but I like the beta6 (6.9.90) for the Internet use, and playing
with photos using Gimp a free photo manipulation software that is included
in the instalation... You will find that in Linux Distro most of the
software is included different than windows...

The final version of SimplyMepis should be completed the first part of
December... But the developer could be waiting for the final version of KDE
4, before releasing the final version 7... KDE 4 is scheduled to be
released during large press event at Google headquarters in January after
the CES in Las Vegas...

PCLinuxOS - 2007 is another good Linux distro that will run well on your
system...

Linux can be tested with a live CD in 256 Megs of memory...

Remember linux can be installed in about 30 minutes including the
software... With a little experience a user can install Linux and a HP
printer in 30 minutes....

Why a HP printer? Because HP releases drivers or information to create Linux
drivers unlike some other printer companies...

Cheers and good luck...
