Compaq 5000 (5wv254) Unk Hard Error - Can't Install OS

I have a relative's Presario 5WV254 that is killing me. I attempted to
do an OS upgrade to Win XP Pro (from ME). The software did it's
compatibility check, said it was ok, and I started. Locked up half
way through the install. Attempted many things... but ended up
removing the hard drive, installing it into my computer, reformatting
it as a blank FAT 32, returning it to the Compaq. When I try to
install WinXP Pro, it does it's normal thing until it's almost
finished with loading the install files, and then I get BSOD with the
following error message.

STOP: C0000221 Unknown Hard Error
systemroot\system32\ntdll.dll

I've scoured the web, including the MS KB article. It appears to be a
not uncommon problem, but most people get it AFTER the OS is
installed. I tried another build of Win XP, on the remote chance the
install disk was corrupt. I replaced the HD with another I had. I
removed everything except one memory board and the video card. I
reset the CMOS. In all cases, same error in the same place.

Spent 45 min with Compaq/HP tech support. She told me to do all the
things I've already done. Then she said, "take it to a service
center". Thanks!

Anyone have any ideas? If I could get an OS loaded, I could
troubleshoot, but this has me stumped. At this point, I would even
take WinME back, but apparently you have to buy the QR CD from
Compaq, it's not included. I've ordered the disk, but I'm not sure
that will even be the answer, given the nature of my error. Thanks in
advance!!!
