fans start-stop-start when booting by [email protected]
I have noticed with many PCs, when booting, the CPU fan goes on for a few seconds, stops, then starts again. On some the first start is at full screaming RPM. Why is this so? Some people even think something is wrong with the PC when it behaves thus.

printer port wsd? by lew
I got a new printer to replace the 9+ yr old laser; replaced the lan connection with the new printer instead of using the wifi capability. Found that win8.1 "found" the printer but using an "wsd" port; googled wsd port but don't see any "good" explanations as to the drivers being used. I have set...

FCC...Maybe there hope? by Flasherly[_2_]
What "last mile ISP(s)" - there's millions of people and two mega providers in my area, *insured* they're the only carriers, because they bought out the corrupt local official governments with franchise/taxing incentives. IOW -my last ISP told me they could not provide services because one of...

How close are SSDs to onboard memory? by Seymore4Head
I have always wanted my OS on a chip where if it gets infected you could just start over without a new install. With that in mind, could an SSD drive be designed so it plugs into the mobo? I assume memory is still much faster than SSD, but it would be nice if everything was self contained.

Win7 late warning about graphics card power by [email protected]
I replaced the graphics card in a PC. It is only used for e-mail, so I went to spare parts cellar and grabbed what I thought was a low power card. It had a PCIE6 power socket, but I did not notice then. A week later, I got a warning from Windows to the effect that the Nvidia graphics card does not...

WARNING: ISP internet speed increase could lead to cable modem failures. by Skybuck Flying[_4_]
Hello, I'd like to issue another warning: When your ISP increases your internet speed, your very old cable modem may fail eventually. It's processor will have to work harder, draws more power, it may fail/overheat or the adapter may fail.

(stumble bumbled) fix for logitech trackman finally by Flasherly[_2_]
Well, almost. Got the thing apart, found the 'Hidden Screw' I'd missed before. Microswitches almost look generically orderable, well marked w/brand &etc. Four microswitches, 2 to a side, regrettably, on non-swappable PCB (left switch boards don't fit the right, viz a viz &etc). That means:...

Printer ink by Mr Pounder
Forgive top posting. I have a HP C7180 printer with an empty orange cartridge. When this happens HP kindly stop all printing until you replace the cartridge. You can't even just print in black, I tried all the tricks I could find on Google. Like many others I am disgusted with HP. As I print very...

Could a network connection work like a phone jack by Seymore4Head
I have a WDTV and a smart TV. I only have one network connection at the location. I really don't need another one, or the current one for that matter. Both are also wireless. It just made me wonder if the devices could be made with an in/out Cat5 port. I say that because I would only be using...

Transcendental floating point functions are now unfixably brokenon Intel processors by Yousuf Khan[_2_]
" This error has tragically become un-fixable because of the compatibility requirements from one generation to the next. The fix for this problem was figured out quite a long time ago. In the excellent paper The K5 transcendental functions by T. Lynch, A. Ahmed, M. Schulte, T. Callaway, and R....

bad earth wire on Antec 900/1200 cases by [email protected]
I replaced the top fan on an Antec 900. The top clips on and is held by 2 small self-tapper screws. There is a black wire with a lug that goes under one of these screws. I thought it would be a shield for the audio, but it goes close to the USB sockets. Now in the 900 series II (and all the 1200...
