New Hard Drives - What to Expect by
Double-T
Hi All,
I am replacing two Maxtor D740X drives with new WD 1200JB drives. Both
setups are Raid-0. I'm just wondering what kind of performance
increase/decrease to expect. The specs are listed below, but to put it
simply, the Maxtors were 80GB 7200rpm, ATA 133, 2mb drives. The new WDs...

PM 8 doesn't move NTFS partitions? by
I've been trying to use Partition Magic 8 to move a partition on a hard drive.
It tells me it has to shut down to do this, and eveything else looks ok but when
I restart the partition is the same as before. I've tried this several times.
Using on Win 2000 Pro, 9 gig SCSI with 2 partitions (C: @...

Acronis True Image by

To all you storage freaks out there. I just downloaded the 15 day trial
version of True Image and this program seems great. I highly recommend it,
you can make an image of a live XP drive, which is amazing. Almost as
amazing as the Intel utility that lets you go from a single disk to a...

Seagate U6 lifespan by
nutso fasst
Can anyone comment on the longevity of these drives? A bought a couple
(340810A, 40GB) a few years ago and only used one, as a backup/scratch drive
that doesn't get used much. I'm planning to use the unused one to replace a
Fujitsu MPB3064A (6.5GB) that's seen over 3 years of 24/7 use in a...

A question on write caching by
Robert Mischke
I'm planning to add a new 120gb drive to my system, but I'm not sure
if I should take a 2Mb or 8Mb cache version. What bothers me is the
following thought: If current hard drives cache writing operations,
isn't the risk of data loss (by power failure etc.) higher with 8mb of
cache? I'm thinking...

Comments on Castlewood's New 5.7Gb Orb drive? by
Mark
Has anyone used the new Castlewood 5.7Gb ORB removable drive? Their old
removable drive was problematic. As I recall, the older removable drive had
a cheap feel to it. The new cartridges seem to be costly (compared to
Iomega's). It doesn't seem like very many vendors are carrying the new
drive....

Maxtor DM+9 write cache disabled after reboot by

I have an ECS P6VEM mainboard (socket 370, Via VT133 chipset) with a 60
GB Maxtor DM+9 as primary master, and an 80 GB DM+9 as primary slave.
The 80 GB drive was showing very poor write performance, so I downloaded
the IBM/Hitachi feature tool, which revealed that the drive's write
cache was...

New problem? Power intake of hard disks at spinup by
Robert Mischke
I recently bought a new WD1200LB (120 GB, 7200 rpm, PATA) to replace
one of the two WD800BB's (80 GB, 7200 rpm) in my PC. After I exchanged
the drives, the system would not complete the power up process.
Everything begins normally, but after about two seconds it shuts down
with a two-tone warning...

Is my BIOS limiting my hard drive size? by
Edward
Hello,
I recently obtained an older computer with a 1.3GB hard drive. I put
in another 8GB hard drive - however when the computer boots up it
freezes when it detects the 8GB hard drive. I've tried many
combinations with just the 8GB in, 1.3.GB as master, 8GB as master,
all with the same results....

Robust 2.5" drive by

I'm going to buy a Vosonic hard drive housing with card reader, and have to
find an appropriate disk for this purpose.
What's the most robust and shock-resistant 2.5" drive available? The drive
should manage extensive vibrations (in a speed boat), and should also be
capable of writing without much...
