SCSI block or streaming commands by Zen
Is there any advantage(s) using SCSI block commands (SBC) against SCSI streaming commands (SSC) over Fibre Channel for large file transfers (streaming)? Which one is more efficient? Does any one have seen such topic being discussed or analyzed? Your input and direction is truly...

brocade SAN switch question by zombie
Can anyone tell me what the significant differences are between the brocade 3200 and the 3250. Brocades web site indicates that the 3250 is cheaper, but I would like to know if there are any features in the 3200 that have been cut down in the 3250 in order to reduce the price.

Brocade VS McData by zombie
Hi World, We are architecting a SAN infrastructure and looking to purchase SAN storage and Switches. WE have nailed down the storage that we are looking to buy. It is a Hitachi 9530 . We are not sure which switch we want to buy though, we are looking at either two brocade 3250 8 port switches or...

inode usage / file by zorba
Hi, I have a 1.4 TB Volume exported over NFS, accessed from a Linux NFS(v3) client. I have to fill all indoes on this volume. One way of doing it is to create so many files which is time consuming . One more option to use is Snapmirror/Replication technologies to create this Data set. Anything else...

Daylight savings time blunder by _BNC
Every transition to/from Daylight savings time results in a 1 hour discrepancy between file time stamps on FAT32 volumes and NTFS volumes. Any way to auto-correct so that both are handled in the same fashion?

I've noticed that a lot of external USB 2.0 drive enclosures are unreliable. Which ones have worked out well? Anyone?

Where is Storage Computer (SOS, RAID-7, Goodlander) now ? by _firstname_@lr_dot_los-gatos_dot_ca_dot_us
Anyone remember "Storage Computer Corporation"? They had the unforgettable stock ticker symbol SOS, owned the domain name storage.com, sold RAID-7 disk arrays (which turned out to be RAID-4 with a write cache, and got the RAB all hot and bothered), and were owned/operated by Theodore (Ted)...

ATA Reliability: Seagate, WD, Maxtor by _R
Not to start any heated disputes here, but I'd like to get general feedback re reliability of the three major brands. I run a few Raid arrays...Actually Raid 0, so reliability is important. WD was the first to feature larger buffers, and many started using them as a result of the p.r. surge. I'm...

Diff between FAT32 and NTFS re daylight savings time by _R
This drives me nuts: If you have two partitions--one w NTFS, one with FAT32, they'll go out of time-sync by one hour when daylight savings time changes. MS chose to handle it differently on the two file systems. Some archiving software (Araxis Merge) has an option to regard the files as same...

Best way to image active system partitions by _R
To my knowldege, there are still 3 major players in drive imaging: Drive Image, Ghost and Acronis. Since the first two seem to be in a state of flux, I thought Acronis would be the best bet. Their simple, directl layouts general present things in a way that can be understood in the context of the...

SIIG same as Silicon Image? by _R
I've been having trouble with my Promise ATA controllers (known BIOS issues that Promise apparently doesn't want to fix), so I'm looking for a replacement. I was originally looking at Adaptec's model 1233, but haven't been able to find it locally. Someone recommended "silicon image" but I haven't...

Multiport IDE cards, problems with Promise IDE ctrlr. by _R
Anyone have recommendations for reliable IDE cards? I'm looking to replace my Promise controllers due to annoying errors posting as system events every hour. (Time sync error or whatever. It's a known problem with Promise controllers) Lately I've been getting the above error along with a second...

ATA controllers by _R
Yeah, I said ATA. I'm using add-on ATA controllers to get up to 4 more non-Raid drives per system. I try to buy what's out there in volume cause I figure the beta testing will be done already. Unfortunately, not so for Promise ATA controllers. They don't seem to be very concerned with tossing...

RAID! by _|_|_
I'm trying to find info on how Raid 5 works *in the case of 3 data drives + 1 parity*. I understand how exor'ing 2 data would yield a parity bit, but the 3data/1parity algorithm eludes me. I can't think of how you'd have enough info to recover, even if there were such a thing as a 3-input Exor....

What's the modern reliable, rewritable media? by ~Dude17~
X-No-Archive: Yes Anyone know what's the modern high capacity rewritable media that can be written in a manner like a floppy drive using drag 'n drop that is very reliable? I'd like something that can be permanently archived and can be used over and over again without a significant reliability...

Problem With A Backup by ~~~AllisonWonderland~~~
James C. Allison: I don't know what kind of information that I need to supply, so I'm going to just describe the problem, and if more info is needed, I'll supply it when I know what it is. I'm running a 1.8 GB Pentium, Tyan Trinity Motherboard, 1.5 GB RAM, and Windows 2000 Pro OS. Recently I...
