NDMP over a WAN via IP using Tivoli Storage Manager (EMC) by
Fred
I know this might sound nuts, however, We have just put a celerra in place
in our environment and looking to back it up via NDMP... (thats the easy
part)
The hard part is, that our tape silos are a few miles away and my mgmt is
asking if NDMP can be used to backup this celera over the WAN. Now I...

Connecting Silkworm 3850 to 4100 (Cascade) by
SteveRoss
I will be attempting (for the first time) to connect a new 4100 to an
existing 3850 to extend the fabric. My understanding is that the
switches will recognize each other and configure the ports they are
connected on as E type automatically, forming an ISL. Are there any
gotchas I should be aware...

Snap Server 4100 aborts on boot by
[email protected]
My boss just gave me a hand-me-down Snap Server 4100 that we've had
shelved for a couple of years now. Unfortunately, it won't complete
it's boot and cleanup anymore. Initial startup works fine and the web
interface works almost immediately. I can view information and toggle
some settings...

Booting from DotHill SAN on Solaris by
Mark Round
Hi all,
I am about to embark on my first SAN project, and just need to confirm
a few things before I get going.
The plan is to get a stack of Sun T1000 1u servers (mainly because they
offer a real punch in a tiny form factor), serving web content in a
load-balanced configuration. Because they...

Promise UltraTrak SX4000 and 500GB HDs? by
peter
Hi,
I would like to hear from anyone who has used 500GB IDE hard drives
with the Promise UltraTrak SX4000. Do they work okay for you? Have you
run into any trouble with them?
I need to bump up my storage in the SX4000 I use at work from the 250GB
drives we currently use. Before I go and buy a...

DLT 8000 Hardware compression by
[email protected]
Hi,
I'm using a Quantum 40/80 DLT tape drive with hardware compression
enabled. The software used to backup our systems is ArcServe v.11. The
tape drive was working fine before we moved it to a new server (old
server 2k, new server 2k3).
Ever since the drive was installed on the new server the...

Feedback on HP EML 103? by
Will
Does anyone have feedback on the HP EML 103 tape library, comparing it for
features and reliability against an ADIC i2000 or Overland Neo 8000? I
heard the EML is an OEM Quantum library, and I have never much liked the
reliability of Quantum libraries.

Hi,
I have a Storage Tech 9840 Tape Drive but I don't even know how to
configure it. Does anyone have a link to an operators manual or a web
site that has a good technical breakdown of the drive and error codes
etc?
Thanks,
Rob
P.S. The general manual online in PDF format isn't the one I am...

EMC SANCopy, Clone, Snapshot question by
Clayton Sutton
I am new to this SAN stuff as we just got a CX500 and CX300 installed by
Dell. I am trying to get my arms around the SANCopy, Clone and Snapshot
concepts. I know that they are different but I don't know how. Can someone
explain them to me?
The way I understand it is if I did a "Clone" of a...

1.8 internal HD compatibles by
JaxDawg
I'm trying to replace a dead hard drive in my mp3 player (Creative Zen
touch). Its a 1.8" Hitachi 20gb (model HTC424020F7AT00). Since the
player is a few years old, I'm trying to find a replacement drive
pretty cheap. $130+ seems to be the going rate.
Are there any compatible drives that I may...

query regarding :RAID by
amritanshu johri
Hi,
I am planning to build system where it is possible to create 100's of
array(raid 5) at a time, that means some of them can go faulty even
before init-task is complete. If INIT hasn't completed then there is no
way to rebuild the array(?).
Lets say raid-subsystem does things this way.
We bypass...

adding iSCSI to existing SAN by
vince
I am sure this is stupid question.
I have an existing Clarrion CX500 SAN. I would like to add iSCSI
capabilities to the storage network. What do I need?
I know it's a gateway of some sort but I can't find any part numbers or
even what a device would be called.
Thanks,

how to find out the "lifetime" of DD5-tapes? NOT MTBF.. by
[email protected]
Hello,
some advanced backup-solutions do allow to define the
"tapelifetime" in order to be able to use/take a new tape
from the tape-recycling pool before the tape in questions
really gets broken(e.g. too many read/write-errors).
It's quite easy to find out the MTBF of different tapedrive-
types...
