Marginal OEM Power Supply by Bill Davidsen

Unicorn spotted--a helpful guide through Intel (including Atom),AMD, and Via without the fanboy extras by Robert Myers
Things change so fast that even reading Hennessey and Patterson isn't enough to keep up. Here's a document from someone who clearly doesn't take someone else's word for it if he doesn't have to: http://www.agner.org/optimize/microarchitecture.pdf Includes an interesting discussion of SMT and...

Is D945 Chipset Windows 7 Compatible? by Don[_14_]
Can I run Windows 7 on a PC with an Intel D945GNT series motherboard? I'm not using the onboard audio or video chips. If necessary, can I download the chipset drivers? It has 4 gigs or ram and dual core 3.4 ghz processor. I know it's over three years old, but it is fast enough for me. Thanks

New unlocked Intel CPUs hit the market, for cheap by Bill Davidsen
The new unlocked i5 and i7 CPUs hit the market today on sites like Newegg and TigerDirect. At least on Newegg they are OEM, no cooling provided. Claims of 4GHz with air cooling have been on the net, but as my grandmother used to say, "The paper hold still" (her translation from the German).

Putting UPS's in series? by William R. Walsh
Hi! Have you looked into replacing the UPS battery with a larger capacity one? This does not always work, especially if the UPS manufacturer never intended for larger batteries to be used. The charging system may behave improperly, especially with a cheap UPS. This is the preferred (and...

Putting UPS's in series? by William R. Walsh
Hi! APC sez in their owner's manuals..."do not plug a UPS into another UPS or into itself". I've never been able to talk myself into ignoring that just to see what happens. I expect that plugging a UPS into itself is begging for disaster and will be very stressful on its circuitry at the...

Intel D510 Atom cpu by Zeppo
I'm looking to build a really small inexpensive email and web browsing box for my brother, an autistic person who lives a very small room in my sisters house. The D510 looks like it might fit the bill. I like a lot of things about this processor and a small netbox should be easy to cobble...

freeBSD and compilers by Jonathan de Boyne Pollard
I find for most applications the same is true of 32 bit. Fortunately x86 maintains multiple widths of working registers from 8 bits up, which can be taken good advantage of in some cases. For my work, probably half of my variable can be held in 8 bits. Probably 40% require 16 bits...

Far and near pointers on the 80286 and later by Jonathan de Boyne Pollard
I have detested the old x86 segmented architecture for about three decades. Where "about" is "less than", given the release year of the 80286? (-: x86_64 doesn't even support segmentation. And good riddance!!! What took them so long?! :-)
