cpio question by
2hawks
Hi,
How does the -E filename work with cpio? By example, I had an archive
with about 5500 files in it of which I only needed three hundred. I am
thinking that the command:
cpio -iv -E filename /dev/st0
or similiar would extract only the files listed in 'filename'. Is this
the correct...

Recovering a broken SNAP server? by
[email protected]
I have a SNAP Server which won't reboot properly. Usually it will end
up in the Recovery Console. This allows me to Upgrade/Repair my OS
(which I've tried but doesn't help) or blow away my data (which I'm
loath to do).
So far as I can tell from the diags below it's still able to access...

SAN ReDesign by
robprzy
Rodrick,
I would at least entertain a system design from McDATA and Cisco. Have
them give you an ROI pitch on their products as well. Consider the
roadmaps of all 3 companies and compare that to your needs. I am
surprised that you have had problems with your Hitachi. Are these drive
failures or...

ESS/Shark performance problems? by
[email protected]
Mike,
I also admin two ESS ("Sharks"). Usually, your storage vendor or an
IBM rep will be able to perform a comprehensive performance analysis.
Just curious -- how are you collecting these stats? Are you using
IBM's ESS Expert 2.1.1?

IBM DS300 v.s. DS400 by
Simon
Hi,
Am considering recommending purchase of either an IBM DS300 or DS400
storage system for our environment. I've done a little reading on both,
and understand the obvious differences (e.g. iSCSI for DS300, Fibre for
DS400, more disks for DS400 etc), but I'd appreciate some advice on the
specifics...

SAN Disaster Recovery by
Reno
I'm installing another SAN in a remote office to mirror the data from
my main corporate SAN to the remote office. I only have to go about 1
mile and wondered, could I use my existing Multi-mode dark fibre (300m)
with repeaters to extend the distance to the other builiding? I could
then connect...

SAN information and comparisons by
Harkin
I am trying to decide between a XIOtech Magnitude 3D, IBM DS4300, and HP EVA
4000 SAN. I have scoured the web trying to find a site with some comparisons
of at least two of them but haven't really found anything worthwhile. Does
anyone have a link or links to some info that would help in my...

Partitioning library for Windows & Linux by
Robert Bamler
Hi,
I'm writing some piece of open source software that needs a partition
library which runs on both Windows and Linux. The library should be able to
resize a fat-partition on an USB-device (iPod) and create a new partition
(from an image-file) on the released disk space.
I've already searched...

SOHO Backup solution recommendation by
[email protected]
Hi, I posted this other places as well, so let's see what kinda
reaction I get here.
My wife has a photography business out of the house and has been
bugging me about putting together a backup solution for her pictures.
She shoots mostly in RAW format so the amount of space I'm looking at
is in...

Unitrends - DPU 3000 by
Peter Parker
Hi folks,
Is anyone here using a UniTrends disk to disk backup solution? I'm
considering implementing the DPU3000 and was hoping to get some general
feedback. I'm currently using Veritas Backup Exec and a HP LTO tape
drive for backups.
The disk to disk solution seems like it would be light years...

Labelling on Legato Networker? by

I am using X-Windows to administer my Legato Networker 7.1.2.
Prior to the server hardware upgrade (new machine), when we labelled
previously labelled volume, there isn't any prompt for confirmation.
With Networker re-installation, I am unable to switch off the label
overwrite prompting.
There...

ESS/Shark performance problems? by

We have a shark that serves three platforms (Windows, AIX, and mainframe).
Recently we migrated from VSE to z/OS and the performance of the Windows
on the shark has gone through the floor. I am collecting performance
stats on the shark. Is there anyone available I can send these files to
that can...

AIT Drives Under USB? by
Will
Has anyone been successful in using any flavor of AIT tape drive under USB,
mapped through IDE? I know Sony makes an IDE version of the drive, and it's
common these days to find cases that will map IDE/EIDE hard drives into USB
2.0. I assume those same casese could map an AIT IDE drive to the...
