ethernet to USB is very slow...help? by jtsnow
When I send data over my home LAN ethernet to a hard drive running on a USB 2.0 its very slow data transfer. This is PC to PC over 100baseT wired home LAN to do disk backups. The slowness occurs in the translation from 10baseT100 to the USB 2.0 and the CPU is 100% utilized. Are there cards that...

Tape Backup by [email protected]
I am looking for opinions on what a decent tape backup for a PC workstation might be, somewhere around 40 gigs or so, speed is not the biggest issue, mostly being reasonablly priced and around 40 gigs (give or take a few). I'm wondering what people think the better brands are for this type of...

Improving LAN txfer rate? by jtsnow
Im doing drive image backups over a 100baseT LAN using Norton Ghost from a PC P4 w/XP to a network storage device. Looks like the transfer rate over LAN is about 25 Megbit/s and LAN shows 25% utilization and CPU about 50%. Drive is only being accessed about 1/3 the time so drive is not limiting...

Why Can't NetApp Keep Time by [email protected]
The company I work for has NetApp file servers and according to our IT people, they can't keep proper time using NTP. Why not? Consequently, builds across network drives are a nuisance. Apparently the clock drifts fast and our ops set the time slow to compensate. We don't have to have the...

iSCSI userspace implementation? by Andreas Krennmair
Hi, I was having a quick look at iSCSI on Linux, and there seem to be a number of solutions, both for using a Linux host as iSCSI initiator and as iSCSI target. What I saw was that virtually every solution was kernel-based, supported by some userspace daemon. I do understand that this is the way...

Heat an issue for External disk? by jjsmithin
I put a Western Digital 120Gig 7200rpm in a USB external case used in a home office and I would like to leave it on 24/7 to backup up 4 PCs over LAN. (If I have to remember to turn it on each day, I wont get consistent backups) The case has no fan, but good space around it and vents for...

Ghost 9 wont do increments by jtsnow
I have Ghost 9.0 running on 4 PCs with XP. Ghost is updated to latest revision. On one PC it will not do an increment, it only does a baseline backup each time. I did read that if the drive changes enough it will do a baseline....or a defrag...but that is not happening here. On that same PC I...

Slow LAN transfer rate...why? by jtsnow
I have a PC, P3 600 XP SP2, on my home LAN that when it does a backup to a network harddrive on the LAN, it only outputs data at about 10megbits/s or about 10% of the LAN utilization and 100% CPU utilization. This is with no other activity on the LAN. And this is doing drive image backups...
