i686 package by
Ph. Chantry
Hi all,
I try to install a product on one RH box, with cpio, not rpm.
The install notes of the product indicate:
"This product was built on RedHat Linux 7.2 for i686 compatible processors
and is targeted for Linux Kernel 2.4.7 or higher and glibc 2.2.4 or higher
versions."
rpm -qa tells me that...

FLOPS per Cycle on a P4 by
Andre
Hi,
Can someone please tell me the number of Floating-Point Operations a
Pentium 4 (2.6Ghz) can do in a single cycle? Also, what are the grouping
instructions that can be performed in a single cycle? (for example, 1
load/store operation, 2 integer ops, 1 flop etc)? What good is SSE or
SSE2 in...

Clone server instead of IBM server by

Im trying to convince my boss, just to buy a clone server (custom

cost double too.

64 bit processors and software ... by
Harry Muscle
I was wondering if someone could maybe elaborate a little on the new 64 bit
processors that are comming out soon and how they will most likely affect
us.
First I'm wondering, can software written for the 64 bit processors run on
our current 32 bit ones? If not, what timelines do the big companies...

D875 Setup Questions by
neon
UPS arrived yesterday with the parts. :-) Got a few setup questions:
1. 3.0ghz retail processor. Nice copper base. Would Arctic Silver 3 be
better than included thermal grease?
2. The real question: Two (2) Western Digital Serial ATA 120 gig HD's.
I'm planning on running Raid-0 on my Intel...

a couple of P-4 questions by
i'm_tired
First, hyperthreading. I recently read in a PC mag and on a laptop makers
website that Hyperthreading only works for WindowsXP. I somehow doubt the
truth of that. Isn't Windows2000 able to handle hyperthreading? (and are
there not some flavors of linux/unix able to as well?)
And, I'm wondering...

Hyperthreading CPU and Win2K... by
Craig
Does anyone know if Win2K would benefit from Intel's new "hyperthreading"
technology? I would have thought that you would need a kernel that would
support it and Win2K would not be aware if it.

Craig

RAID 1 on 875PBZ? by
Adrian
Heh, thanks for the link. The IAAR v3.5 runs in parallel to the BIOS
which supports it. Apparently, Intel said it does support RAID 1, but
the drivers and BIOS aren't released yet. In fact, they released IAAR
v3.5 *before* the appropriate BIOS update. That version of the IAAR
relies on features...

The terminal solution to unchecked buffers by
Michael Tippach
Having been hit by the w32.blaster myself, I was thinking why do the
main IA32 vendors not put an end to this.
How?
Provide some (sticky) bit in some MSR to disable this expletive
JMP ESP instruction. Make it generate an #UD exception instead, so
the OS could actually spot an attack right when...

It POST's OK, detects H/D and memory correctly etc. However, I am

D875PBZ from NF7-S by

I picked up this board last week. I had serious corruption issues (couldn't
even get XP to load) with a Raid-0 setup with a pair of 120 gig WD SATA
drives. I ended up flashing the bios to P09 from P05 and lowering the
memory timings from 2-2-2 to 2-3-2. Problems disappeared, XP loaded in
