color of ethernet ports? by [email protected]
I have seen pictures of some high-end mainboards, which have a red ethernet port and a black port. The red being a 2.5GBASE-T port. Sombody told me that 10 Gbps ports are blue, but I doubt that. Last place I worked at had a cluster with 10GBASE-T and I am sure it was all Henry Ford black. USB has...

64-core processor, a dream cpu or a nightmare monster ? =DDDD by [email protected]
I am drooling over the idea of having a C64 =D Which in this case would be a C=computer 64=cores ! LOLOLOL. I really want a 64-core computer, which would be capable of 128 threads. I wanted such a parallel computer since 1999 or so, and it has taken this industry almost 20 years to reach that...

DVI v DisplayPort by Peter Johnson[_5_]
I have a monitor connected to my PC using DVI ports on both. But the monitor has DisplayPort capability. Would there be any advantage in installing a video card with DisplayPort capability in the PC and using DP instead of DVI?

Intel halves the price of 18-core i9! by [email protected]
yesiree, 10980XE will be half the price of 9980XE No doubt due to competition from AMD. Although I heard elsewhere that Intel didn't sell that many of the 998OXE, as not enough dies had full 18 cores working. Charge $2000 and that would dampen demand to what they could supply. So have Intel got...

int 13h & greater by Hul Tytus
I'm looking for the method(s) used to access disks with greater than 8 gigabytes capacity on the IBM style computers, ie Compaq/hp, Dell, etc? I've checked interupt 13h for the presence of "extended" capabilities but have found nothing on 4 different machines. There is, obviously, another access...

Modem or Router Issue by Bill[_39_]
I have a Motorola SB6121 cable modem and a Cisco E1000 router. The router needs to be reset (wires unplugged and replugged) one to several times per day (for instance twice in the last half hour). On these occasions, sometime the router is dead and unresponsive, and it seems I need to...

Win XP quits loading (Finally forced me to get a new box) by pheasant16
Puts the desktop picture up, but loads no icons and won't connect to network. Boots into safe mode just fine. Still have the original retail XP disk when I built the box. Took it to a computer store, they didn't ask about the disk, but their advice was too old get a new box. They tried a...

Is it possible to update Windows 7 without adding any Windows 10 "features"? by [email protected]
I just built a new machine. I think I remember reading that Microsoft was adding some of the Windows 10 snooping capabilities to Windows 7 updates. I'm just wondering if that's true, and how to tell which updates to avoid if it is.

New (to me) Rescue Image (Bootable WinPE) by Shadow[_2_]
Won't post in alt.comp.freeware, not sure how "freeware" it is. https://sergeistrelec.ru/ Has just about everything thrown in, and you can add more stuff, but then you would might need to burn it to a pendrive, too big for a DVD. Disclaimer: Nothing broke here, so not tested.

End of new build saga by Rene Lamontagne
As I said in previous post I gave my new build z390, i7 8700 build to my son in exchange for his old i7 950 Gigabyte x58 system. Well I played around with the old box for a week or so then found it was not to my liking, That board has been rather troublesome for the last 9 years, So I decided...

sil3114 sata card by T. Ment
I bought a cheap sil3114 sata card to try as an add-in card in a motherboard that has no SATA ports. It worked OK until I tried flashing its BIOS to the latest version. The updflash.exe utility started up, but failed. Now the sil3114 card hangs the computer when booting. Seems I bricked its BIOS....

green led by T. Ment
My computer case green led failed. I bought some on Ebay, but they are so bright they light up the room and obscure the other color leds. Any suggestions for a cheap source of low intensity leds in a 3mm size? Maybe Mouser, but then $1 worth of parts costs $10 to ship. If I have to spend that much...

Promise SATA (legacy) by T. Ment
PDC20318 chip (SATA150 TX4) PDC20319 chip (FastTrak S150 TX4) They both have 4 SATA ports. The 20319 FastTrak is RAID only, the 20318 SATA150 is hard drive and ATAPI (cdrom), but no RAID. I got a FastTrak on Ebay, it works, but the RAID BIOS takes 29k of upper memory. I load many things high,...

PCCHIPS M811 IDE UMDA by T. Ment
The PCCHIPS M811 motherboard is known to have IDE UMDA errors at ATA-100 speed. Windows XP downgrades it to ATA-66 and that works. But DOS has no way to downgrade it. BIOS can enable or disable UDMA per drive, but has no option to limit the speed. BIOS just uses the highest speed the hard drive...

ECS K7S5A, clone M830 (PCCHIPS, Amptron, etc) by T. Ment
Earlier, I said in the "motherboard 5v" thread: My $20 power supply is OK with a 12v motherboard. I'll match the K7S5A with a better power supply. Once I did, the K7S5A 5v was 4.90 or so. I thought everything was good, but now, after a few weeks, it's down to 4.80. Still within spec, but...

Memory and the Ryzen 3000 by John Savard
I'm planning to put together a new computer using one of the new Ryzen processors. I heard that 3600 MHz memory would provide the best performance for it, because using faster memory would require something to be slowed down to two memory cycles instead of one. Then I learned some more details:...
