64-bit or 32-bit: When will it matter? by
aether
Building a computer from scratch. It'll be built for someone who'll use
it for alot of things, but tilted in the 'gaming' direction. Should
whether the processor is 64-bit or 32-bit matter? If not, when? If so,
how so? In other words, should I go AMD or Intel? I understand AMD is
slightly faster...

24-pin Power Supplies: What's going on? by
aether
Why aren't retailers specifying whether the power supply is 24-pin or
not? Check out newegg.com; there's no way to tell. I've gone to
multiple online stores, and they simply don't list it. I'd like to find
a list of which power supplies are ATX 2.0 (24-pin). As of now, I can
only guess, or attempt...

2.0 GHz Northwood: Compatible with the D845PT? by
aether
Have some spare parts, and was curious. Reading the specs., the D845PT
supports up to 2.0 GHz. However, since the 2.0 GHz was a leap to 512k
cache from 256k, I was wondering if this motherboard (D845PT) will work
with the Northwood 2.0 GHz CPU.

Different brand of memory in the two dual slots: A problem? by
aether
There's slots 1 & 2, which are paired with the same type and brand of
memory. (dual channel twin pack) If I were to add two additional DIMMs,
also twin dual channel modules, but of a different brand, would this
cause any problems? Is it preferable that all four slots be of the same
brand and make?...

Necessary or optional: Clearing CMOS after updating BIOS by
aether
Per the manufacturers website (ABIT), it states one should clear the
CMOS (by moving the jumper off for a couple seconds) after updating the
BIOS. I never found this necessary in the past, and have updated the
BIOS without doing so. All of the additional features in the new BIOS
are available. Am I...

After upgrading my computer to Intel D865GBF motherboard, the IBM
DeskStar (parallel) IDE drive has suddenly been set to "MS-DOS
compatibility mode". Do you have any idea what could be causing this?
The MS documents say this is result of loading a DOS device driver
through CONFIG.SYS, but...
