Power failure during Windows 7 defrag (x64 Ultimate edition) by
Castor Nageur[_2_]
Hi all,
Yesterday night, my Windows 7 started a disk defragmentation (Windows
7 defaultly scheduled a disk defrag once a week).
Unfortunately, the Murphy's law was verified once again : the defrag
started at 1:00 AM and my house had a general power failure at 1:10 AM
in the middle of the C:\...

Windows XP SSD tweaks? by
John Doe
(Crossposted, please feel free to trim group)
Are the following Solid-State Disk drive tweaks for Windows XP
legitimate and significant? Anything else?
Disable AHCI in both Windows and in the BIOS.
Make sure write caching for the SSD is enabled.
Change the Windows registry.

500 GB WD My Book external H/D suddenly not wanting to fire up by
muzician21
I've got this WD 500 gb Firewire external My Book drive I've been
using to store mostly video files for a big video project. It doesn't
have an on/off switch, it powers up when power is first applied, goes
dormant after a period of inactivity and restarts when you try to
access it. It's worked...

Problem 80 wire cable for hard disk by
ClueLess
Posted to comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware.storage, 24hoursupport.helpdesk
Hi Friends
Here is a strange problem, when I connect my hard disk using the 80
wire cable my computer does not recognize it.
It happened this way. I had to check another hard disk and so I
swapped the disks (IDE0) and found it...

ATA 100 & ATA133 by
Woodchuck
I purchased a Maxtor 250g which includes their ATA133 PCI board. The
question is since my MB supports ATA100 is there much of a performance if I
don't use the Maxtor board? The new drive will be installed as "D" since
some of my software installed on "C" is registered and references to
something on...

Slow write speeds on a WD 500GB drive by
bbbl67
A friend of mine had an WD My Book external case, which contained a
500GB WDC WD5000AAVS-00ZTB0 hard drive inside it. At some point along
the way the My Book's interface failed, it's warranty was expired, and
so we took its hard drive out and installed it directly inside his PC
case. This was back...

Adapt IDE hdd to SATA plug by
gemelli47
Hello guys
I have a satellite receiver with built-in plug to connect a SATA hdd:
The plug is female and of course transmits both data/power supply.
Now, I wonder if there is some adapter to connect an IDE hdd instead.
I would avoid spending money for a SATA, as I have a number of IDE
hdds.

Is it true that it is a bad idea to put a swap/pagefile on a SSD? by
Ant[_3_]
Because that wears out the SSD quickly, and it is better to put it on a
slow HDD. If so, then how do computer (especially laptop/notebook) users
with only a SSD (not hybrids with HDDs) do this? I assume Windows, Mac
OS X, and Linux follow this rule?
Currently, I have a Debian stable box that...

Workgroup Backup - What Media? by
[email protected]
Hi Guys,
I am thinking about backing up our 7 PC workgroup. We dont have a
server or a domain controller, but we do have a spare PC which can
host the backup device.
I think at this stage it would be sufficent to backup everthing under
Documents N Settings on each XP PC.
I was looking at using...

What wears out in an HDD? by
Micky
What wears out in an HDD? Is it only the tone arm that breaks? or
can the bearings the platter rides on break??? Good watches use
jewels, rubies, as bearings; and cheap watches use metal. What do
hard drives use?
I googled but couldn't find much about this. Does the spindle really
ride on...

What is the best defragmenter? by
Frank W.
I used Diskeeper 8 and it seemed to do a better job than the original defragmenter in Win2k. I read
someone using Perfect Disk. Any other recommendations?
And what are some other utilities to keep your hard drives working well? Does error checking in Windows
make any difference? Does it really...

RAID-1 and bad sectors? by
[email protected]
I just used BootItNG to resize the 2 NTFS partitions on my hard disk. I was
increasing the size of the C drive, so I had to shrink the D drive and slide
it down to the end of the disk. When I did the slide operation, I told it to
slide everything including the unused areas. I ended up getting an...

USB external HDD convert to SATA possible? by
Dave Seven
I bought an HD PVR and they use a SATA port to connect an external HDD
instead of USB for extra storage space. I have 5 external USB HDDs and
would rather use one of those than having to buy a new external SATA
HDD. I looked on NCIX for such a converter and can't find one. Is there
such a...

so what is the deal with maxtor's bad reputation ??? by
Lorenzo Sandini
I have had many different HDDs in my computers for the last 10 years,
and never suffered any hdd death or loss of data. Maybe I was just lucky.
I haven't been too worried about being at the bleeding edge of access
times and sustained transfer speeds, and I have tried P-ATA RAID0 with
various...

RAID: identical disks? by
[email protected]
I've read that it's best to set up RAID with identical disks (same brand and
model). I've got a Samsung SP1213N hard drive which I got 21 months ago, and
now I want to set up RAID 1 on my machine. So I'll need to get another
Samsung SP1213N. But I know that sometimes manufacturers will make...

IDE storage prices tumbling? by
Davis Rorgh
I have not been keeping a close watch on the price of IDE hard disks here in
the UK but I took a look at prices recently and they seem to have fallen a
lot.
I know it's all "faster and cheaper" with a lot of computer equipment but it
seems that HDDs have really taken a big drop.
I am looking at...

Ok to leave slave HD cable connected with power off? by
Mark
I want to use a slave hard drive occasionally as a Drive Image backup disk.
I don't like the idea of the backup hard drive always being powered on
because hard drives are rated for a certain number of on/off cycles. Can I
just unplug the power cable and leave the flat ribbon cable connected when...

How to play an old floppy disk. by
mm
A friend gave me a 5 1/4 inch floppy that she wants to retrieve some
data from.
It has a reinforcing ring around the center hole. That means it's low
density, right? 360KB per disk, right?
Another friend tells me that newer HD drives will not read LD disks**.
That I have to find a LD drive. ...
