IDE or AHCI ? by Lynn McGuire[_2_]
What is the fastest hard drive access method for Windows 7 x64, IDE or AHCI ? I have a WD 1 TB caviar black, a Gigabyte z68xp-ud5 motherboard and a Intel I3-2500K with 8 GB of ram. I see these thoughts: http://expertester.wordpress.com/2008/07/24/ahci-vs-ide-%E2%80%93-benchmark-advantage/ ...

Which external portable HDD to get these days? by Ant
Hi all. I am in a need to get another external portal HDD for mostly backups. It can be a name brand bundled one or enclosure + HDD. However, it has to be from cdw.com since my boss and employer said so (dumb, I know -- I guess it is the contracts or discounts?). Anyways, I need a big HDD that...

Recommendations on cool hard drive by Sam
I'm in a need of a hard drive very soon. Don't have much time to do research. I'm thinking of a 120 G to use with my Promise UDMA 100 controller. Which hard drive now is the coolest temperatures wise, most reliable, and preferably not noisy. Thanks

IDE+Ethernet controller? by Fabien LE LEZ
Hello, I've got a few noisy IDE hard disks, and I would like to put them in a room far away from where I work, along with a IDE controller and a Ethernet controller. A solution would be to throw away my hard disks and buy an external Ethernet hard disk. However, I'm afraid that would be...

WD Hard Drive Size Issue by Carl Lucas
Have a Dell Dimension 8300 desktop. Just installed a Western Digital 160 gig hard drive without any problems. An issue is that the set up shows the drive as 160 gig. However in Windows it shows it as a 126 gig. What's with that? After I installed it I went to "Control Panel", "Administrative...

Opinions/Experience Maxtor Onetough II external drive? by Doc
A local vendor has what seems to be a great deal on a Maxtor Onetouch II 300 gig external drive w/USB 1.1/2.0 as well as Firewire in/output for $69 after rebates. That would provide all the space I could conceive of needing in the forseeable future for temporarily moving stuff off my work drive...

Best format for USB flash drives nowadays? by Ant
Let's ask comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware.storage newsgroup as well. I'd assume exFAT can do it, but not sure if non-computer devices can. I know all can do FAT32. Jamie Kahn Genet wrote: exFAT to hold 4GB+ files and for faster read/writes (so I'm told - right?)? ...

Temps that shorten drive life by Ed Light
My drives are rated for 5C to 55C; I just asked Western Digital if there's a temperature within the spec range at which their drive would experience a shorter life. For instance, running in the 40's instead of the 30's. They said this won't happen until above 55C. But I wonder if anyone here...

bad clusters/sectors on new laptop, chkdsk gets stuck trying to repair by [email protected]
I recently bought a new HP laptop with an extended warrantee. In the past few weeks, often I would get the blue screen of death and the system will just spontaneously crash and then I have to reboot. I ran chkdsk and it says there are errors on the drive (no specifics). It then tells me it couldn't...

Why is this folder so slow? by Yousuf Khan[_2_]
I have a folder on one of my SSD drives that takes 8 to 10 hours to back up. It is only about 1.4 GB, but it is allocated 2.4 GB of space altogether, and there are 580,000 files here. Indicates that per file it's using up a little bit over half of a cluster on average. File system is...

Disk defragmentation - is it worth it? by Rob Nicholson
I'm currently writing our IT strategy for the next five years - finger in the air time. This includes a serious upgrade (for us) of our file server and Exchange & SQL server. Our current file server has oodles of free disk space (60%) but I'm looking at all options. We've tried out Diskeeper...

Choosing a new 250GB disk for home computer by Andrzej Rokita
Hi all, I'm planning to replace my four years old 80 GB WD Caviar, as I'm running out of space. Its age doesn't help either as SMART data start to show faint signs of it getting old and less reliable. My computer is a home one, activities include web browsing, office-type work, gaming (not...

Can IDE cable's end connector be left idle ( w-o affecting data transfer ) ? by TE Cheah
Per www.pcguide.com/ref/hdd/if/ide/confCable-c.html "Using the middle connector and leaving the end connector unattached ...... leaves part of the cable "dangling". This is called a stub and creates much worse electrical characteristics on the cable, due to reflections from the unterminated ends of...

Anyone know a consumer data recovery service please? by Maria Ripanykhazova
I have had a hard drive crash and didnt realise that the reason the system wouldnt (initially) do backups and then get into windows was that the HDD was crashing (I thought it was something to do with having installed Easy CD Creator onto a Windows 2000 machine) See postings elsewhere...

Utility to test IDE cable connections? by Lil' Dave
While I agree with another post concerning physical memory (RAM) being a component of I/O can be a problem, there is nothing mystical about it. IE - cosmic ray. Nor do I agree that ECC should be used for an at home desktop. Stick with quality memory from Crucial for instance. Don't mix/match...

format of pagefile on 2nd hard drive by Timothy Daniels
If the OS and data files are in a partition formatted for NTFS, is there a recommended format for a partition on another hard drive that is dedicated as space for the pagefile? Should the pagefile partition be NTFS also, or is there a reason why it should be FAT32? *TimDaniels*
