So many online reviews are a mess by
Percival P. Cassidy
It's occurred to me that now, with such vendors as Amazon and NewEgg
listing items that are actually sold by other vendors, it's impossible
to be sure to what items a review is referring: is the review of a
brand-new item, a used item, an open-box item, or a used but
refurbished/renewed item?...

What's inside a WD Essentials external drive? by
Percival P. Cassidy
You won't know until you shuck it: Amazon reviews and answers to
questions concerning WD Essentials USB3 external drives show that what's
inside may vary -- some "white label," some HGST datacenter drives --
perhaps depending on what they had a surplus of at any particular time
(and are some of...

External drives may contain refurbished drives! by
Percival P. Cassidy
I just read a piece by BackBlaze discussing the best kinds of drives to
use for various purposes, and I noticed that they claim that external
drives *may* contain refurbished drives!
This could account for the reports on Amazon that the drives inside a
certain Seagate external drive had an...

Should I Secure Erase my SSD before sending it back for warranty? by
Yousuf Khan[_2_]
The reason I ask is that the utility that came with the SSD says that
there is a possibility that if you use the secure erase feature that it
will lockup the whole drive. So should I secure erase or just delete the
partition and that should be sufficient? I don't want the manufacturer
blaming...

IS this the normal shut down sound a Seagate Barracuda HD makes by
Sam
It only happens when I shut down Windows. Should I go into the bios and shut down from there, it's not present. However, I had the same harsh sound about 6 years ago with another Seagate connected via a dock.

SeaTools Bootable USB *NOT IMPRESSED* by
[email protected]
I have used the Seatools for DOS burnt to a CD for yonks.
But sometimes it floundered with new hardware, either not seeing any
disk drives, or keyboard not working.
So got the new SeaTools bootable creator and put it on a USB thumb drive.
It booted up on a system where the old CD was no good, and...

Do SSD's lose performance as they age? by
Yousuf Khan[_2_]
My oldest SATA SSD (which is also my boot drive) is not showing the same
kind of performance it did when it was new. I only discovered it
recently after buying a new secondary SATA SSD, which I benchmarked, and
then as a comparison I compared it against the older one. The new one is
showing a...
