lost USB drive by
Seamus J. Wilson
I have a Seagate USB drive that ran with no errors. I tried to clean it up
to make big backup. I deleted the partition and now it does not appear in
My Computer. The hardware manager says it is there and enabled. How do I
get it back to format and use?
Thank you,
Seamus J. Wilson

BIOS not detecting hard drive by
M.L.[_2_]
I'm trying to swap a SATA hard drive from a defunct desktop into a
working desktop (Sony VAIO VGC-RA840G) that has no hard drive. The
defunct computer and its hard drive have been sitting in a basement
for about 2 years collecting dust.
After installing the drive according to instructions from the...

What would cause an internal HD to simply disappear in Windows? by
Yousuf Khan
Something strange just happened recently, under Windows 7, although I
have seen it happen under Windows XP before too. A hard drive that's
internal (i.e. always there, not physically removable), just disappeared
from Windows sight. No longer accessible, HD Sentinel didn't see it
either....

Problem with Promise PCI SATA controller by
Daniel Prince
I bought a 2 tb SATA hard drive and a Promise FastTrack 376 (tm) PCI
controller card. The card detects the drive but the drive does not
show up in Windows XP's disk manager.
The card came with no printed instructions. I found a test file on
the CD with installation instructions but the files and...

Thoughts on using a USB disk on a cheapo UPS? by
Al Dykes
I don't have a high opinion of an external USB disk powered by a
wall-wart as industrial-strength kit. Having the PC powered on a UPS
and the Wall wart on house power has potential problems, IMO.
What are the thoughts of putting retail external USB disks on
entry-level UPS systems? These systems...

750GB limit? Why? by
larry moe 'n curly
Why do some older hard drive controller BIOSes have problems with
drives larger than about 750GB or 1TB? IOW why are there limits at
750GB and 1TB, as there are at 8.4GB and 137GB?
Some affected controllers use the VIA 6420, 6421, and 8237x SATA chips
or Silicon Image 680 PATA chip. Silicon...

I want to get some SD memory cards for my point and shoot camera, for when
my other SD cards got full when I was away from home. Additionally, I want
a spare *Micro* SD card for my phone.
Are Micro SD and SD cards identical except for size or are there
significant differences?
Am I more...

SMART attribute #203 -- Run Out Cancel by
Franc Zabkar
All the sources I can find suggest that the meaning of the Run Out
Cancel SMART attribute (#203) is "Number of ECC errors".
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S.M.A.R.T.#Known_ATA_S.M.A.R.T._attributes
This makes no sense to me. Runout is a measure of eccentricity.
Therefore I would think that run out...

Need to make a single 3TB partition by
Yousuf Khan[_2_]
Bought a dual-disk USB enclosure and a couple of 1.5TB drives to put
into it. First of all, the enclosure has a built in concatenation
feature. When using that, Windows and Linux both see it as an 800 GB
drive, rather than a 3000 GB drive! So I put it back to regular mode,
and we see two...

ST3500418AS: Anyone else with problems? by
Arno[_3_]
Hi,
I have had a 500GB ST3500418AS for 5 months now. The drive looks
good on the surface, fast and quiet. Unfortunately mine has
seek problems that are not due to any external problems. These
are now bad enough that I get frequent command timeouts, about
one per hour. SMART is below.
Does...

SATA ports on the ASUS M4N78 PRO motherboard? by

I am thinking of buying an ASUS M4N78 PRO motherboard. It has six
SATA ports. The manual says that ports five and six must be used in
RAID or AHCI mode. What types of drives can be used in AHCI mode?
What types of drives can NOT be used in AHCI mode? Are there any
Windows XP AHCI drivers?

Seagate 300 gig IDE drive seen as unformatted by
Daniel Prince
I have a Seagate 300 gig IDE drive (not SATA) that I have been using

sector 92 is unreadable.
I have a lot of data on the drive that I have not backed up. ...

PCI SATA controller cards by
