Experience with SATA/IDE to USB 2 Adapter? by
cpliu
What is your experience with this type of adatper? Does it work for
you? I've purchased twice but can't get them to work properly with
Windows XP and 2000 on 2 different PCs.
I set my IDE drive as master, connected to USB port, and turned the
power on. It mounted the first time, but I got "delayed...

ATA signal integrity over dual PCBs by
galapogos
Hi,
I'm wondering if there will be severe signal integrity issues if I use
a 2mm pitch 2x22 socket and header combination to connect 2 PCBs
together, assuming I still adhere to the impedance of the ATA signals
on the PCB and keeping the trace lengths within ATA specs? In total
there will be 3...

Lost Windows directories and drive can't be seen by manuf's utility by
news.rcn.com
I was working on my Compaq desktop, trying to restore the partition table on
a laptop HDD. I didn't interfere with the jumpering, (I jumpered the laptop
drive as a Primary IDE on the Secondary IDE chain).
We were using an amazingly useful utility called FindPart and did manage to
restore it,...

Replacement 2.5 HDD for Sony Vaio PCG 582M/PCG Z1RMP by
Ian R
Hi
The Hitachi DK23EA60 drive in my friends old Vaio laptop has died.
I've checked the spec and this is an ATA-5 interface.
Of course this model is no longer made so I wondered if it can be replaced
with an ATA-6 drive?
Fortunately my friend has the Sony recovery discs so we can restore the OS

Transferring and converting partitions to a new disk by
Michel S.
Hello !
I bought a new 320Gb WD HDD to replace my existing 80Gb drive.
This drive currently contains 2 partitions, respectively 24Gb and 56Gb
in size. Both are FAT-32 partitions.
Of course, both will be larger on the new HDD, but I'd like to take
this opportunity to change the partition type...

UDMA 49? by
Amy Lee
Hello,
My motherboard is GA-6VXE+, and I have a BENQ 5232X CD-RW driver and a
generic COMBO. As we know, the motherboard supports UDMA33/66. And the
COMBO is Master, the CD-RW is Slave. When I boot the computer, the screen
shows that my COMBO is 'UDMA 49', I don't know what happened on earth....

Replacement PCB for Maxtor DimondMax Plus 9 by
Pure Chaos[_2_]
My Maxtor SATA drive died a while back, but I still have some data on it I
would like to get my hands on. However that does not justify going to an
data recovery expert because it's too expensive. What I was wondering is if
I can get an replacement PCB board now or used, does not matter.
I...

Serial HD on system with no Serial connections? by
Mycroft_IV
I need more storage on my system. I only have parallel connections
for harddrives. I have available PCI slots (5V 32-Bit). I have XP
SP2.
I'd rather get something that I can use when I upgrade in a few years
so it doesn't look like getting a parallel HD would be worth while so
I'm looking at...

Backup software that supports DVDs? by
George Adams
Can someone suggest a backup program that can handle what I'd like to do?
The short version: what cheap (or better yet, free) backup programs can
backup files simply based on the archive bit?
The long version:
I have about 50G of files I'm going to backup onto DVD. They will
become my permanent...

I wonder if someone knows about a serious discussion and/or article
about the lifespan of modern usb pendrive memories.
I am trying to get a realistic point of view about how those usb pen

have a more limited lifespan than...

re-use WD external USB drive? by
Bucky
I have a WD 80GB external USB hard drive. I believe it contains a 3.5"
IDE hard drive. I was wondering if I could take it apart and easily
replace the internal hard drive with another internal hard drive. I
think the basic issue is whether the housing has the standard IDE data
connector and power...

What are Hard Disc Driver Readers??? by

I sold someone a 40gb second hand laptop hard disc drive on ebay. It
made a slight rattling noise when you shook it - but someone told me
this was normal. Anyway, I did a complete scandisk on it (including
sectors) then erased it completely with eraser and put a fresh install
of Windows on it. I...

eSATA (external SATA) by
Timothy Daniels
There seems to be some confusion in the NGs about eSATA.
The most prominant features of eSATA are the longer cable
length (up to 2 meters), the cable's shielding, and the plug to
accomodate the shielding. eSATA can be used with external
adapters for both desktop PCs and laptops, and...

BIOS device numbers by

I don't know if this is the right group for this but can anyone tell
me what is the BIOS device number for the USB, floppy and SCSI? I'm
going to use for the BIOS calls particularly the INT 13h extensions.
The first hard disk BIOS device number is 80h, and the next one is
81h, right? Thanks in...

maxtor SATA 400GB slow access? by
peter
Just bought a maxtor 6H400F0 400GB SATA drive from Frys for $110.
The spec says 8.5ms access but HD tach says access time is 19.1 ms.
Admittedly, the drive is filled up 50% already before I remember to run the
benchmark. Could this affect the test result?
An older IDE drive is tested to have 15...

Firewire bus power + mobile RAID 0 drive = concern! by

Hi. I'm really interested in this mobile drive, which is actually a
RAID 0 configuration, from G-Technology:

I really like this idea, but I'm a little worried about running it on
FireWire bus power. I'm not worried about battery drainage --...
