PSU location by
Mark[_20_]
I notice that a lot of PC cases now mount the PSU at the bottom. Does
this restrict the choice of PSUs? i.e. Will a PSU with a fan at the
bottom work OK when mounted at the bottom of the case?

OTish: Temporarily moving a HDD to another PC by
Mark[_20_]
I have a Windows 7 PC for use by the family. It has a single HDD
only. This PC needs to go back for repair (noisy PSU). How easy
would it be to temporarily move the HDD, to use just as a data disk,
to another PC? I don't want to spend ages reconfiguring things when
the PC would only be gone for...

Anybody still order from Newegg? by
John Doe
Just curious.
I just ordered an air conditioner :)
Walmart had the AC for the same base price but plus tax. My last
order from Walmart was a ripoff. Haven't ordered anything PC from
Newegg for a long time.

Anybody speak Microsoft? by
John Doe
Microsoft's "SkyDrive" has been renamed to "OneDrive".
Maybe something to do with oneness.
I have a shared folder with these options...

Whoever recommended Agent Ransack for file searching, thanks by
John Doe
I know it was recommended, but I can't find the thread. As I recall,
it was in the Windows 7 group, but I would use it in 8 as well.
It's working great so far. Love being able to find stuff.
The only momentary annoyance was being reminded that it's not for
business use, but that's nothing.

Microsoft jerks "you need 15 different system sound volumes" by
John Doe
Anybody who doesn't understand what I'm talking about doesn't use
system sounds. What a bunch of jerks at Microsoft. The term "system
sounds" is for global sounds. If a specific program system sound is
specified, an appropriate volume sound will be chosen for that
program.
The reason there is...

Lenovo amaze me by
[email protected]
A friend gave me a Lenovo 3000 desktop PC to troubleshoot.
I opened the case and found the mainboard is
GA-G31M-S2L
Eh?
Companies like HP used bespoke mainboards from Foxconn, MSI, ECS or whoever.
One HP I had the mainboard was chip-for-chip the same as a retail MSI
board, just different BIOS. ...

Any danger from people free riding on my wireless router? by
RayLopez99
The other day, much to my chagrin, I reset the D-Link router and somehow I accidentally erased the flash RAM so it was set to default, meaning no password for the wireless. So for a few weeks I unknowingly had a wireless access point turned on and attracted a bunch of people from the neighborhood....

Cloning large drives by
Charlie Hoffpauir
Anyone have a good recommendation for software to use to clone large
drives? I've used Acronis and Easeus, with a lot more success cloning
a 1 TB to another 1 TB with Easeus, but it takes a LONG time, 5-6
hours. (Acronis doesn't want to clone 1TB to 1TB, claiming the new
disk isn't large...

Difficult choice by
Carpe_Diem[_2_]
A friend of mine wants to buy a basic laptop, a Toshiba-c70d-a-111,
priced 399 euro (same price in dollar?).
The processor is rather "basic".
But he wants to replace the internal disk with the new
"WD Black2" disk (SSD 120GB + HDD 1 TB), price 279 euro/dollar.
Would this be a good combination for...

SSD and traditional HD together: drawbacks & advantages? by
RayLopez99
I am reviewing a good introductory article on Solid State Drives in Maximum PC Feb edition.
They mention if you have lots of data, you can put a traditional mechanical HD as your "D" drive and use the SSD drive as your "C" drive.
Advantages? I guess you save money in not having to pay for a much...

The USB drive by Western Digital is the My Passport series, for Windows 7, NTFS formatted. It shows, and I've rechecked a half dozen times and looked for hidden files, that total capacity is 465 GB (taking the smaller number) and, for each folder (taking the largest number and even rounding up)...
