Upgrading Windows 98 by
Metspitzer
I have a friend. He is trying to get an Ethernet adapter to work with
his old machine. He says that he has 98 but he needs 98 second
version. I assume that means SP2 for 98.
The computer works "fine" with AOL, but he wants to use broadband. Is
there a way I could download SP2 and put it on a...

firewall on budget ? by
Beladi Nasralla
Hi there,
I have a PC built for me, and I installed Windows XP SP2 on it. I
presume I need to put a firewall and antivirus on it to ward off worms
and viruses. I am more concerned about the firewall. I installed
ZoneAlarm Free Edition, and it worked al'right. However, it always

Unplugging power cord by
Derek Baker
I see in the manual for my new motherboard - an MSI K8N Neo - it says to
remove the power cord when inserting and removing cards and DIMMs.
Is this good advice or excessive caution? With my current board I never did
that.

Lightning Strike and surge by
John
Hi Everyone.
We had lightning hit across the street from us and my PC got zapped along
with other items in the house. Yes, I had two surge suppressors to no avail.
My home built PC is running a Intel D915GEV MB with four WD 250GB hard
drives and a PCI-E ATI All In Wonder video card.
The PCI-E...

What's an OEM CD - WinXP? by
[email protected]
I know what it is, but do they have a registration number or code so
it's legal and I can get updates from MicroSoft? I'm building a second
machine and I assume if I use my registered copy of WinXP from my
first build, on a second machine, I won't be able to get updates.

How Move OS XP from Old to New HD? by
Nehmo Sergheyev
Windows XP Home (SP1)
I originally had and still have a 15 GB HD, using NTFS,
which had the OS and everything else on it.
I just installed a Maxtor 80 GB DiamondMax Plus 9 Model 6Y080P0 ,which
has a 5 MB Buffer, configured (with the jumpers on the back) as a slave.
It shows up Computer Management...

CPU temps stable, then rising w/o load? by
S. Whitmore
I recently upgraded my system and now have a new AMD Athlon 64 3200+ on
a new ASUS K8V SE Deluxe mobo, with a new Enermax 470W "Noisetaker" PSU.
Ambient temps have been consistenly in the 65-75F range, and for the
couple of weeks I've had the new hardware running, the mobo and CPU
temps have been...

Hardware Requirements for Internet PC by
Searcher7
Can someone give me an idea of what the minimum hardware requirements
are for a PC that will be used mostly for internet, as well as playing
DVDs? (I have a 900Mhz, 512mb XP system).
I ask because the system I've been using gets progressively more
sluggish after a reformat and re-install. There...

Skybuck's "DreamPC 2006" in a COMA AGAIN !!! by

Hello,
This morning I turned on my computer, then walked away... and then as
I was away I noticed how the graphics cards fan kept spinning at top
speed.
I thought something must be wrong because normally they spindle
down... after boot.
And indeed something was wrong... the screen did not come...

Motherboard for P4. by
MS
Hi,
Having had such great replies about which processor to buy, now is my
chance to ask about which motherboard.
I've decided to get a Pentium 4 3.0E Ghz 800Mhz Prescott CPU, but my
supplier (who will be doing the actual system build) has loads of P4
motherboards. I've narrowed it down to these...

Does frequent rebooting harm a computer? by
[email protected]
I switch off my computer twice a day or so because I do not use it for
many hours and would do well to save the electricity. I opted for a
fast computer with a huge display instead of one I could just leave on.
Anyhow, I know how much a computer costs me per day so let's not argue
over it, because...

sucks or blows, which is better? by
Al Smith
Right now I've got my case fan sucking cool air into my case from
the back and passing it over the CPU. I set it up this way because
the power supply is blowing warm out out the back of the case.
I'm wondering which is better, having a case fan suck in cool air,
or blow out hot air? The fan is...

Any need for floppy drive in a new system? by
Ken[_8_]
Is there any need for a floppy drive in a new system? If, for example,
I were to use an Intel mb that has its drivers on a floppy, as I have
heard that the DP35DPM does (go figure!), what would the workaround be?
USB? CD?
I figure I would rather not put in the extra cable if it is not needed....
