Speedfan and SMART temp sensors on WD250 Gig by
[email protected]
Just played around with a utility called Speedfan which apparently can
read the SMART temperature sensor on newer hard drives. Of my three
drives, a Maxtor 60, a WD200, and a WD250, only the WD250 appears to
have the sensor. It's reading 30 C with a motherboard case temp of
25C.
Does this sound...

Disaster after re-install W98 by
julian maisano
I had a 6gb drive with 2 partitions - with data I use everyday without
backup :(- and my system had problems, crashes, etc, so I decided
reinstall it.
I deleted c:\, c:\windows. After that, I ran Install.exe from the
W98se Cd, and then.... Pooom! All files seem to be "mixed", the
partitions aren't...

Are hard drives hermetically sealed? by
fenceerx
Are hard drives hermetically sealed?
Reason I ask is I use an air purifier that puts out neg. ions and ozone. And
ozone will corrode computer parts, make them brittle. Especially a rubber
drive belt in a CD or DVD player. I think most components are impervious
enough and computer will be...

Maxtor External Drive Noise a problem? by
Aaron Lake
I've had a Maxtor One Touch 160G drive for about 2 weeks now. Just one concern
though. Often when it starts up it will clang/bang quite loudly for 3 to 20
times, at a rate of about 2 times a second. It makes quite a racket. Then it
settles down never to do it again for that session. It only does it...

Siig Ultra ATA 100? by
ohaya
Hi,
I just got one of these cards, and I got it working in my system, but have a
couple of questions. Hopefully someone else here has used this...
1) When you boot with the card installed, an additional prompt (press F1 or
F11) appears. What does pressing the F1 or F11 do? It kind of looks...

Higher capacity writable DVD formats by
Daniel Prince
My understanding is that double-layer writable DVDs will be about 8.4
(decimal) gigs. Is that correct? Does anyone know when they will be
available?
What is the expected capacity of blue laser writable DVDs and when are
they expected to be in the stores?
What is the expected capacity of blue...

How to BU You Hoser? by

touted Maxtor One-touch (USB2.0 vs USB/FireWire -this being no Apple
BTW!). Then those saying do it to that new DVD burner you got, Hoss!
Sheesh!
I bet some smart fella has wrote a nice review of the various choices
open to SOHO...

Maxtor 300GB 5400rpm ATA by
Mr. Grinch
Any comments on this drive, specifically the internal ATA retail kit? I'd
be using it to archive videos, music, and system disk image backups, so I'm
not too worried about the speed.
I've got 3 Maxtors (54098U8, 4G160J8, 6Y160P0) and no probs with any of
them. The 5400rpm G160J8 has been fast...

Partition Recovery help needed! PLEASE! by
Aartzi
Back at school, I couldn't get my old win95 computer to reformat, so I let my
"knowledgeable" roommate try to fix it. Boy am I stupid. He went into fdisk
and deleted my partition, so now it recognizes nothing. Just shows A:/. When
booting up, it requires the recovery cd in place, shows the usual...

I have brought a RAID controller to merge many old drives into a big

autodetecting those aincient CHS Mode 0 drives...
So here I have a RAID 0,1,0+1,JBOD controller and a disk space crisis on

Maxtor OneTouch - RUN AWAY FROM THIS PRODUCT by

unless you don't really need the data that you are backing up.
This drive has caused me headache after headache. I just built a new system
and used this drive to back up some files that I really needed to keep. I
built my new machine and was able to get files off of the OneTouch no

CDrom tray won't open by
tanstafl
Other than being broke, is there any valid reason for the CD tray to
not extend when the open button is pressed? I haven't used the drive
for some time, so I don't know when the behavior started. but it won't
open when in BIOS or after W2K is running.
W2K explorer asks for a disk to be mounted -...

Disk read speed benchmark wanted by
Mark Fineman
I posted in part in comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware.storage
on March 31, 2004:
It is accurate enough so that I can see when the
number of sectors per track changes (by looking
at the local peaks), but the range in speed is
more than 20%. I am not sure if this is reflecting the
actual...

Looking for recommendation on smallest and most stylish USB2 pen drive by
Peter
OK, I know this is a subjective question but has anybody got any
suggestions on the most stylish and smallest USB2 pen drives
available.
I am looking for something cheesy; all silvery with a superfluous blue
LED and small enough to fit the tightest of multi-stacked usb ports.

External USB HD speed?? by
Jay Phillips
Hello All, just picked up a SimpleTech 160 GB 7200rpm USB 2.0 External. I'm
getting about 11MB transfer rate. I DO have a 2.0 card. What is the deal
with USB transfer rates? I didn't expect to see 480MB, but I did expect to
see something faster than this. I have a pretty speedy AMD 3000+...
