SCSI-SATA disk storage recommendation? by
- C -
Your requirements sound strangely similar to my project... I have a need for
10TB usable space with RAID10. From my research and current hardware in the
office, I am going with rackable.com's storage servers. For $90k, they will
give me 5 storage severs and a gigabit ethernet switch in their...

EMC Clariion w/ SATA disks purchase advice please by
- C -
Hi,
my company is looking at using Clariion with SATA disks for research quality
storage. This means we want cheap, but still good performance. The nature of
the application is to do sequential reads of many average size 3GB flat
files, say 1TB at a time. So cache on the controller is useless. The...

new faster disk design idea by
- C -
If you ever opened a hard drive, you will see a couple of platters and an
arm that has a head for each surface. So if 2 platters, then 4 surfaces and
4 heads. The arm moves the heads across the platters and the platters
rotate, so any spot on the disk can be seeked with both movement...

fake SATA drives? by
- CT -
I was talking to a storage vendor today, and he mentioned that most SATA
drives on the market are really IDE drives with a SATA bridge, only 1 or 2
are true SATAs...
This seems to mean the "fake" SATA drives will not have the SATA features,
such as native cmd queueing. Which ones are the real SATA...

Cheaper alternative to Promise UltraTrak RM15000? by
.
Hello everyone
I'm thinking of buying the Promise UltraTrak RM15000 for personal use,
since I have 15 WD 100G drives.
The problem is, I'd rather not go with a SCSI-IDE solution, I'd prefer
a Firewire 800 raid case that'll hold 12+ drives.
I'd also perfer a tower system, preferably aluminum...

I have a POS Buffalo Terrastation Live nas. I want to hang it off

NAS doesn't support AD. The software that comes with it only runs on
XP.
The manufacturer states in a FAQ on their website that:

LSI E2400 - Anyone with experience of these? by
1000101011
Hi all
A quick question before I continue, has anyone here had any experience
with setting up/administering LSI Logic E2400 Metastor storage arrays?
I have a performance issue with a setup here which I have been battling
against for sometime now (its a fully live environment).
Setup is:

RAID 5 corruption, RAID 1 more stable? by
[email protected]
On several occasions I have seen situations where faulty UPS's caused
servers wtih RAID 5 arrays to reboot continuosly which caused
corruption to either the RAID array itself or the file system. I am
considering recommending RAID1 whenever possible because I suspect
that it would be more resillient...

site that has a good technical breakdown of the drive and error codes
etc?
Thanks,

cpio question by
2hawks
Hi,
How does the -E filename work with cpio? By example, I had an archive
with about 5500 files in it of which I only needed three hundred. I am
thinking that the command:
cpio -iv -E filename /dev/st0
or similiar would extract only the files listed in 'filename'. Is this
the correct...

Floppy Tape drivers for DOS or windows by

I am trying to dump raw blocks from a floppy tape device to disk file

I am having little luck.
I am unable to dd with mks as the floppy driver doesn't perform with
the tape drive.
Obviously I can't treat it like a scsi device.

tape header ID by

Hi,
I wanted to throw this out there. I am trying to identify what created
some tapes I have.
These are 1024 byte blocked. The first two blocks contain "IDH2" in
the first four bytes of each block respectively. Then two (yes two)
tape marks then data.
Probably a netware server, early 90's...

Tape Scanning in Linux by
2hawks
Hi,
Could someone kindly tell me how to scan tapes in Linux. For example,
if there are multiple cpio archives on one tape, how can I find out how
many are on it? If I am thinking correctly, cpio will only list
whatever is the first archive it finds.
Is it in the method of addressing the device?...
