What to do with disgarded equipment? by
Ken
After years of tinkering and upgrading, I have all kinds of old video
cards, various PCI cards, old mb's, old memory, and scads of parallel
and serial cables.
Does anyone know if there is a charity or group that would welcome this
old computer technology? I could throw it away but that seems...

Power supply by
Ken
I want to build a PC the function of which is only for storage at home.
I want to purchase a reliable power supply but I don't really know
what that means. Over the past 20 years, only one power supply has died
out of perhaps as many laptop and desktops combined.
I already have 4 drives that total...

Recos for mb for system used for storage and backup by
Ken
I want to build a system that will be used only for storage and backup.
It will be about 1T in size. (I don't plan on using RAID, although most
ASUS boards seem to come with RAID 0 +1). I have 4 SATA drives and
would like a mb with a header as opposed to having to add a board to
accommodate the...

Case reco? by
Ken
I am building a unit that will be unsed only for storage storage,
perhaps up to 1T or more, so it would hold at least 4 drives. Who
makes sturdy cases with no bare edges to cut my hands, with lots of bays
and good ventilation? (No bling here--no lights, clear sides, no chrome
or mag wheels....). ...

Failing CD-Rom Samsung CD Master 24E SN124---replacement recos? by
Ken
I have a Slimline computer the size of a pizza box that I purchased a
few years ago from PC Power and Cooling. It serves us well.
It has a Samsung CD-Rom: CD Master 24E SN124 CD-Rom which is on its
last legs. It is an ATAPI slim optical drive and it is a notebook piece
of equipment. I would...

Understanding DVI video cables between DVI-I and DVI-D single link by
Ken
My new video card has a DVI-I single link female output. My monitor has
a DVI-D single link female input. What cable do I use???? DVI-D?
As i understand it, the DVI-I allows the output to accept either DVI or
VGA+adapter outputs, so my assumption is that the DVI-I single link
output...

Custom IDE 80 conductor cable at reasonable price? by
ken
I have an unusual setup from PC Power that I purchased a number of years
ago. I would like to add a second hdd; as it will be side-by-side with
the primary drive, and close to the mb connector, I can get away with
4-5 inches between the mb and slave connectors, but I need 7-8" of cable
to...

Planning a small desktop/under desktop system by

Only because it is relatively slow now, I want to replace a slick 2" x
18" x 18" PC Power and Cooling system called Sleekline that they made a
number of years ago. It mounts very nicely in the leg well of my wife's
desk.
What options do I have for a box that would sit below the desktop and
not...

MB AGP 8 slot? by
Ken
I am considering a new MB (Abit VA-20) which lists its AGP slot as AGP
8x. Does this mean the MB will accept AGP 4x boards as well, or is must
it be stated as such? I have seen some MBs that list the slot as 8x and
4x. Thanks.

Is there going to be great differences in performance between a drive with

Problem getting Plextor PX-712A DVD/RW Drive Working by

I just purchased a new Plextor PX-712A DVD/RW drive to replace a Sony
DRU-500A drive that failed (fails read self test). I expected that I could
simply install the Plextor drive, connect the cable and power, and be in
business. Unfortunately that has not been the case.
I seem to be getting...

I have a Maxtor model 90650U2 hard drive (6.4 GB) that I think has a

this model. Listed below are the specs:

Any older style ATX mb with DVI? by

I have an old PC Power and Cooling Sleekline PC whose form factor I like
2" x 18" x 15". It has an AOpen MX4GR mb and a 2gHz Pentium 4 cpu. It
is vintage 2003 or 2004. I know that since then, ATX 2.o boards have
been in use.
I would like to replace the mb to one that would run a faster chip...
