Is Seagate into the data selling "business" ? by Shadow[_2_]
Bought a 2 TB hard drive. Cloned my offline HD to it, containing all my personal data. Films, photos, passwords, diary, bank details, receipts etc. No illegal stuff, just data I don't want to share with the world. Everyone needs a backup, right ? Two months later it makes a fizzling sound and I get...

How could 192 TB be squeezed on a half-inch tape? by [email protected]
Perusing the future LTO standards, there is LTO-12 192 TB (uncompressed). Currently at LTO-8 with 12 TB. I believe LTO-10 48 TB will happen, but after that seems to be a wish list.

5.25" floppy drive to IDE to USB? by Anthony K.
Is it possible to get a vintage 5.25" PC floppy drive connected to a modern PC with no floppy controller and just USB/FireWire inputs? Do IDE 5.25" floppy drives exist? If so, I could drop one into a USB enclosure. Is there an adapter that would let me connect a floppy drive to an IDE...

Disposing of a hard drive. by Lynn McGuire[_3_]

claimed SCSI (parallel) speeds by [email protected]
Looking online for SCSI host bus adapters, I saw one supposed to Ultra 160, but is a PCI card (limit 133 megs) So maybe okay for disks, but if you tried an LTO-5 tape drive, ahem would it not flounder?

BenQ FuQ ! by [email protected]
The 2018 award for biggest piece of junk in the history of electronics goes to BenQ !!! For producing one of the most useless garbage cd/dvd rom reader/writer drives I have ever seen ! 1. First the drive started to fail to open and close. 2. Now it completely blocks the drive. Even pulling or...

I think I've solved my Spin Retry Count problem by Yousuf Khan[_2_]
I have stated previously that I have an older drive that seems to get a lot of Spin Retry Counts in SMART, but other than that it's rock solid: it has outlasted a whole bunch of newer drives that were previously giving no error messages whatsoever in SMART. Well, it looks like I've now also...

hardware questions by Linea Recta[_2_]
This is about the phone Samsung Galaxy S4 mini. I got it second hand. It came with a small mains plug shaped adaptor which connects to the phone with a USB cable. This cable has a "normal" USB plug on one side and a mini plug on the other side. This cable is very short. I have a longer cable with...

In celebration of World Backup Day, March 31 by Lynn McGuire[_3_]

why be mobile "performance" HDD smaller capacity? by [email protected]
I had a laptop with 2 WD Scorpio Black drives, and it seemed quite impressive. That was only 750 GB. Seagate's rival Barracuda Pro goes up to 1000 GB. Whereas a plain 2.5 inch drive goes up to a 2 TB from WD, and a fat 5 TB from Seagate. What is compromised to get the speed?

LAN backups by Lynn McGuire[_3_]
Speaking of LAN backups, our office LAN backup is at 4 TB and growing at 100 GB a month. I still use three internal backup drives, two are WD 4 TB green drives and one is a WD 8 TB white drive ripped out of an external drive. The 4 TB drives only have 200 GB of free space and have been...
