How to clone from a current SSD to one previously used as the boot drive? by Charlie Hoffpauir
I have an Intel SSD that was my old boot drive on my system. I cloned it to a new Samsung SSD with no problems. However, since the operating system is still on the old Intel, my software won't recognize it to use it as a cloned backup of the new Samsung SSD. So how do I remove the operating system,...

Question about the win 10 update data loss by Charlie Hoffpauir
It was my understanding that the data loss was limited to data stored in the C: users (name of user) Documents folder. Anyone know if that's correct? I happen to have a few files there, but haven't noticed anything missing.

Nuts are for new computers by Flasherly[_2_]
8 hrs and finally got it down. Long damn trip, From Intel socket 775, to AMD 2, to AMD 3+. Migrating OSystems over three hardware platforms. Still have one OS left to reinstall. Rest I "salvaged". Damn SSDs don't work a damn on older platforms. It took a new MB to get all my SDDs functional. ...

WPA3 by Davej
So WPA2 is broken and WPA3 will probably require new hardware? Why can't they at least generate a firmware "band-aid" for WPA2 ?

Win 10 home networking by Charlie Hoffpauir
I'm having an awful time trying to get my simple home network working between all my computers, since the elimination of Workgroups in Win 10. Basically, I have three desktops, mine, my wife's, and one that's acts as a file server for backups. In additiona there are three portables of various ages,...

Q/A Why Is it Two Hands are better to grip your Butt Cheeks by Flasherly[_2_]
When it's not apparently enough to just to backup data, in the event of hardware failure, two computers are better than one. I replaced my blown-up computer. The power company replaced their Pole Pig. We are both sad victims of lightning. My cost is now $120 for new CPU, MEM, & MB. Less than...

How to measure Explosive Bomb by Flasherly[_2_]
About knocked me out of bed. Lightning hit somewhere in the backyard. Blew up my motherboard. Power supply still works good, drives good. Keyboard and mouse OK. Everything off a wall socket, including the monitor is OK. My PCI soundcard quit or got blown up, the cable modem was...

how many tape drives had SATA interface?? by [email protected]
I bought an internal DLT drive at a computer swap meet, thinking it was SAS interface. When I got it home, I found it was actually SATA. Quantum made them with SCSI, SATA or even USB. Nowadays you see tape drives with fibre channel (copper) even though the drives are mostly too slow to need that...

Intel's "9th gen" CPUs by [email protected]
Interesting series of leaks and rumours. So they will still be 14 nm, in effect a Coffee Lake facelift, but with more cores for little more dollars than previous generation. So they are still worried about AMD. One of the interesting tidbits was solder thermal interface; perhaps that is how they...

SSD DRAM Less Controller by Flasherly[_2_]
Although I wouldn't go so far to compare low-balling SSD offerings for resemblances to the bubonic plague... - "At Computex last June, one SSD vendor told us about an OEM 2D TLC SSD that will burn through the rated endurance in a little over a year." Robust performance ratings that are crippled...

idle curiosity - why internal HD rather than external HD by Yes[_2_]
Given some recent problems with my pc, I've started daydreaming about moving all my HDDs (all are SATA) from inside the pc case to an external device. Please keep in mind that I don't have a solid handle on the right words to use. I've seen at least two types of devices - an enclosed box to put...
