Intel raided in Korea by
Yousuf Khan
This is a press release from AMD, will post proper news articles when
they get published.
"The KFTC's dawn raids are part of an investigation into Intel's
business dealings with four South Korean PC makers. AMD continues to
believe -- as specified in its private U.S. antitrust complaint filed...

IBM.PC - what's in a name... by
Alexander Grigoriev
Isn't that ironic that there's no IBM PC anymore, but comp.sys.ibm.pc.* news
tree is pretty much alive. And 3.5" floppies are still sold as "IBM format".
And mices are sold as "PS/2".

Whatever happened to x86-64? by
YKhan
Adorable little Ed Stroglio rant:
Hatching Eggs . . .
"Remember x86-64? The stick AMD was supposed to beat Intel to death
with?
Then Intel got themselves the same stick, and the would-be beaters
found something else to talk about. Yes, AMD is doing better now, but
not because of x86-64. Indeed,...

MBR recovery by
George Macdonald
Just thought this might be useful to someone else:
In the course of attempting to convert my single drive to RAID-1 (I had a
"spare" drive hanging around) I managed to clobber the partition info in
the MBR. This was using the nVidia BIOS RAID management (nForce3 mbrd) and
yes I felt dumb but it...

Why Dell will start with AMD notebooks first. by
YKhan
EdG wrote:
Dell is waiting on fab36 parts for the servers and the desktops.
Until now, people were only saying that Intel is only vulnerable in the
server and desktop arenas. It might be a worrying sign that Dell might
start off by offering mobile chips first.
Apple will lay down plans for...

I found this a fascinating article, lots of detail about chess program
optimizations and stuff, and none of it bores you.

"Since that time I've wanted a chess computer as powerful as Deep
Blue-my own world-champion-level sparring...

Cooler for Socket A AMD Sempron by
[email protected]
Hi,
We've just bought six Socket A Sempron 2400 (OEM - no cooler)
processors to keep our older Socket A based kit running for a little
longer (We had two or three Athlon XP 1800 processors die on us). We
have some unused coolers which are designed for the Athlon XP 1800+.
Will these be good enough...

Need your opinion on this chipped CPU by
[email protected]
I just got this Athlon Tbird (bought on ebay):
http://home.comcast.net/~voidnospam/cpu.jpg
I was disappointed when I saw that the lower right corner was chipped.
Would you be comfortable running it in your system? I've read reports
from people who have used chipped CPUs that *usually* worked but...

Interesting 4P Opteron server from Appro by
Rob Stow
http://www.appro.com/product/server_3Uxserver_opteron_4.asp
4P in a 3U case
8 DIMM slots per CPU.
Up to 64 GB or PC3200 or 128 GB of PC2700.
What makes it interesting is the mezzanine motherboard.
I've seen this kind of stacking to make an 8P Opteron box, but
this is the first time I've seen in...

RFC: Sony Playstation-3 the next IBM PC? by
Jan Panteltje
I will write this, because it is a sort of funny conclusion I came to
yesterday.
It affects this groups subject, no I am not a gamer, do not have a ps2 or
xbox no.
This is the 'train of thought':
Many people in Europe use an old PC (say K6 or Duron) as video recorder for
digital satellite TV,...
