RAIDING different size drives by
Sydney Lambe
I want to mirror 2 disks mirror using RAID.
Can this be done on a 750GB and 500GB disk?
It's a single user desktop running XP with RAID provided by a PCI card.
Might change the mobo to one with RIAD if it's better?
This is for editing audio. Don't want to lose audio work if a disk fails
so...

Unable to recover huge files? by
Ant
Hello.
Is it me or is it really difficult to undelete/recover huge files (a few
GB) on both FAT32 and NTFS even right a few minutes after the deletions?
I have noticed this in the past and right now.
Currently, I have a 5.63 GB MPEG-2 file. Both undelete programs (EASEUS

boot manager that actually works? Acronis Disk Director any good? by
Andrew Hamilton
I'm looking for a boot manager that allows me to have multiples OS
partitions on my C drive, but with the inactive partitions hidden, and
an easy way to select the OS to boot when you turn on your system. I'm
willing to spend some money to get a reliable and solid product.
"Free" isn't as important...

does file copying go via mobo? by
Paul[_19_]
Am running XP Pro/SP2. I have a SATA HDD attached via USB. I made a
copy of about 20 GB of data from an internal HDD to the USB HDD.
I wanted a second copy of the data and I wanted that second copy to be
stored on my USB HDD. IYSWIM. So I used XP to make a copy:
source = the USB HDD

Windows won't start, boot from Acronis Trueimage CD to recover a backup and
it says
"Unable to read from Sector 5.062 etc of hard Disk 1" when I look for
backups to restore
and goes no further.
There are backups on both another partition of that disk (as well as on
another seperate drive),...

We have a Western Digital WD6400AACS "green" 640GB drive in an external SATA
enclosure attached to a Dell computer through a Promise TX4302 two port

the computer, the drive is seen by the Promise BIOS. But if we reboot...

Anyone recommend a windows (or a something on a bootable disk maybe)
disk tool that can exercise drives (read and write)? Preferably
something that works with USB drives too.
I need something I can leave running for a few hours as I've been given
a number of drives I don't know the state of. ...

A fast trick that did not work by
Lars[_2_]
Hi group,
Background; A friend has a Fujitsu Siemens laptop with an 80 GB HD.
There are only abt 12 GB files and folders on it, but still Windows
says there is only a handful GB free space on it. So there must be
some crap taking up space. The drive has only one partition. Rather
than having him...

How full should a hard drive be? by
Paul[_19_]
I got a new hard drive and have started moving data off some over full
(90%) hard drives.
What sort of amount of percentage fullness should I aim for?
I'm hoping there's a "knee" in the graph which shows fullness versus
performance which represents the point at which small increases in...

SCSI inquiry to get storage device serial number by
galapogos
Hi,
I'm trying to get the serial number of a storage device. I've tried
sg3_utils and sg_inq does this. I tried calling the functions within
the sg3 source files, but I can't seem to build it even after
including the relevant header files.
I've also tried forming my own SCSI inquiry CDB and...

Why are HDD platters harder than the floppy/ZIP discs? by
GreenXenon
Hi:
I have a question just out of curiosity.
I notice with ZIP discs and floppies, the disc is a soft dark-brown
round film-like material that can easily be shredded -- with paper-
shredder -- to remove confidential information.
However, the magnetic platters in HDDs are much harder and metallic.

Should I worry about Spin Retry Count? by
Yousuf Khan
One of my oldest drives a 200GB Maxtor, has a spin retry count problem.
HD Sentinel reports its health at only 40% due to this. But it seems the
spin retries only happen during bootup. If I keep the machine running,
it never happens. It also doesn't happen during warm reboots, just
occasionally...
