Good quality LTO2 tapes? by
Benno
Hello,
when we bought our HP MSL6030 tape library about two years ago we also
ordered a set of HP branded LTO2 tapes with it. About half of these
tapes now start to present crc errors on verify (Veritas BackupExec).
Can anyone recommend a LTO2 tape brand that they have good experience
with (weekly...

Number of drives per RAID controller channel (Ultra320)? by
Benno
Is there anything to say about the maximum number of drives you should
connect to a Ultra320 channel on a RAID controller (for a single RAID5 set)?
Modern Ultra320 10.000RPM drives have a throughput between 59 and
118MB/s (according to Seagate datasheets). Does this mean you can only
have 3 to 5...

RAID5 performance in modern servers? by
Benno
On a modern server system (mid-range HP server with HP Smart Array 640x
64-bit, 133MHz PCI-X controller and 15.000rpm drives) will the read
performance still increase with the number of drives used? Is there a
"sweet spot" of the number of drives to be used? Or do other factors
come in play on...

Disk subsystem design questions for new database server. by
Benno
I need to build a new database server (SQL server on new HP or Dell
hardware) and I have a question about the disk subsystem. I want to
separate the OS, logfiles and database files on separate disk arrays.
The OS will be placed on RAID1 on the machine's internal RAID
controller. I intend to install...

Maximum number of disk in RAID5 / RAID50, best practices? by
Benno
Dear group,
we're in the very, very, very early stages of looking at iSCSI SAN.
We've seen the SUN 7210 that can be configured with 48 250GB SATA disks.
Two are used for OS. How would one configure the remaining disks? If
using RIAD50, how many disks can/would you use per RAID5 group?
Thanks.

Tapedrive performance / shoes shining? by
Benno...
Hello,
we have a Compaq/HP MSL6030 tape library (with one LTO2 drive) that is
connected to a dedicated Ultra320 SCSI card on a Compaq ML370 (PIII
933Mhz/256MB).
We use BackupExec 9.0 on Windows 2000 with the Veritas tape drivers. The
best backup transferrate we see (on a local RAID5 disk set...

FC SAN v.s. iSCSI/CIFS by

Hi,
See also my previous post "Alternative for NetApp F825c (for CIFS & iSCSI)"
We currently have 2 Windows fileservers, a Exchange mailserver and a
MS-SQL database server. Our network is all Windows (servers and
workstations). We expect to grow to 6TB in 5~6 years (mail 20%,
databases 5% and...

Alternative for NetApp F825c (for CIFS & iSCSI) by
Benno...
So we've been looking the NetApp F825c and it will no doubt do the job
but it's a *tad* expensive and also I don't like the whole RAID4 thing.
Can someone suggest a reliable alternative for the NetApp F825c that can
grow up to 6TB and has enough Ethernet expansion ports and also has a
way to...

Could Windows act as an iSCSI server? by
Benno...
I know that Windows 2000 and 2003 server can be a iSCSI host but can you
setup a Windows machine as iSCSI server?
In other words can you use Windows to create some sort of SAN/NAS device
that services it's disks to other Windows hosts via iSCSI?

Thanks!

RAID stripe sizes. by
Benno...
Hello,
I'm about to reconfigure the disks on some of our servers and I was
wondering if anything can be gained (performance wise) by choosing none
default RAID stripe sizes.
The servers are Compaq ML370's with SmartArray 5300 controllers. Two of
them will have have six 36GB drives in RAID5 and...

Cheap D.I.Y. / pre-build NAS or external RAID array? by

I'm looking for a (1U or 2U) Intel server that has an internal RAID 0&5
controller (SATA or IDE) and can hold 4 drives (250, 300GB) and has a
DVD drive or a NAS with the same specs.
Or a 19" (RAID 0&5) rack that can hold at least 4 STAT/IDE drives that I
can connect to an existing server via SCSI...
