new faster disk design idea by
- C -
If you ever opened a hard drive, you will see a couple of platters and an
arm that has a head for each surface. So if 2 platters, then 4 surfaces and
4 heads. The arm moves the heads across the platters and the platters
rotate, so any spot on the disk can be seeked with both movement...

Cheap Way To Share Fibre Channel Storage by
Will
I'm looking for a cheap way to have more than one computer share
read-only access to fibre channel storage under Windows 2000.
I'm using Compaq fibre channel arrays for the hardware, and those
are fine for low-end use, but they don't have any option
internally to give read-only access. A host is...

Crazy idea........USB flash drives converted to IDE or SATA disks. by
Boll Weevil
My computers HD crashed again and I have to reinstall everything. Recently,
these USB flash drives are getting quite reasonable and I began to think how
nice it would be if I could used them as a boot drive instead the traditional
head thrashers. I was looking at the 3.5 inch dead HD and perhaps...

state of third-party vendors support for Microsoft's VDS/VSS architecture? by
Charles Morrall
I have from time to time scanned the storage vendors support for VDS and
VSS, more specifically I've been looking for downloadable binaries for VDS
and VSS provider software. So far, the results have been quite slim. A while
ago, HP was quite open and although it wasn't obvious you could find...

From SCSI U160 to SAS by
Marco De Vitis
Hi,
I have a server which has an Adaptec SCSI Card 29160 installed; it has
an "old-style" 68-pin HD connector.
Supposing I need to connect it to an HP StorageWorks 60 Modular Smart
Array, which only offers SAS connectivity... is there a way to do it,
maybe through some intermediate device? I doubt...

SSD and SATA150 by
[email protected]
Hi,
I'm looking for SATA-150 SSD storage. I can't use SATA-II because the
Motherboard has a track record of going completely nuts with SATA-II
disks. My question: Can some modern SSDs be jumpered to SATA-150? If
so, which ones? Or can they be configured via software (on another PC,
in this case,...

Logical SAN by
[email protected]
I have a Solaris 10 system (x86) connected to an external usb drive,
I'd like to play around with SAN stuff(learn SAN), is there a way to
carve up a virtual SAN on this external drive?
I'm trying to figure out an inexpensive(hence usb external drive) way
to create a "logical SAN", I guess some way...

Replacing an OEM Mobo... by
Jimmy Roberts
My Sony Viao PCV-RX360DS (UC28554430) came with an Asustek CUSL-LV
Rev. 1.xx mobo and a 40 GB ST340823A Rev. 3.07 hard drive.
Can anyone comment on the compatibility of replacing the OEM hard
drive with a 250 GB WDC WD2500BB 55GUC0 Rev. 08.02D08 hard drive?
Thanks!

Help with chosing a SAN! by
cqmman
Hello,
We are a looking at buying a SAN. Size is barely an issue (less than
2TB initally), but we would like something extendable. We would to run
important (but not big in terms of size or transactions) database
(both MS SQL and Oracle) as well as perhaps Exchange on there, and
replicate those...

HELP : how should an Implicit ALUA system respond to an STPG? by

hola ffolks:

Windowsupdates for NAS boxes by
Scott
Hello,
I just purchased a Dell 725 NAS box. I loved it, until I ran
Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer.
When I did that, it showed several critical patches that needed to be
installed (the one that fixed the SLAMMER worm of 2 years ago was one
of them).
