Slow Formatting of Drive by
wtw[_2_]
I installed XP Pro on a new 320G HD last week, and need to do it again.
However, after 30 minutes it's gotten to the 4% mark. It took less than an
hour last week. What's up? Should I kill it? Maybe I should have used the
quick format available in install.

Diagram for read-write diagram by

I would like to see a diagram of just how modern drive's read-wright
arms are assembled. I am trying to understand how these get driven. In
particular, I am interested in the magnetic configuration.
I have tried Wikipedia and Google among other sources, biut what I have
found, leaves out...

Progress' status even though I followed the suggestion of powering it
up by depressing the INIT red button at the back of the unit.Anyone
else had success in cancelling the Backup in Progress status?
I cannot do much maintainance...

File system on the HD of a DVD recorder by
Lars[_2_]
Hi group,
I know this is not a bina fide ibm.pc question, but where else to ask?
I have this Sony DVD Recorder, RDR-HX710 with a built in hard drive,
WD 160 GB. Late one night my fingers where faster than my brain and
rather than reformatting a RW DVD I reformatted the HD, and lost all
the cool...

This probably seems like a dumb question, but, I just bought a NexStar
enclosure for my 500GB drives to run RAID 1 on. Drive appears fine in
Vista 32 Home Premium and works fine.......
How can I bee 100% the second drive is truely being written to and is
the mirror?? Is there any way to verify...

Humpty Dumpty (Dead Hard Drive) Returns by
wtw[_2_]
Well, my $75 investment to restore the drive was worth it. As it turns out,
it spun up for them, and they quickly recovered the entire drive to a 320G
external drive I had given them. I'm now about to use unstoppable to create
on a new HD a bootable copy of what they gave me. If that doesn't...

My Cheshire Cat HD Problem by
wtw[_2_]
I put together a PC over a year ago with both a large SATA drive and an old
IDE drive. The other day I noticed I could see the SATA drive, but not the
IDE drive. At first, I thought maybe I didn't really have an IDE drive
there. I needed to test a potentially damaged IDE drive and have a...

keeping drives cool in a MicroATX case by
Dan Lenski
Hi All,
I have recently added a second SATA HDD to my Linux workstation, which is
housed in a very standard microATX case. The processor is a low-power
Athlon X2 and stays at a reasonable 35-37°C with stock heatsink and fan.
I noticed that the HDDs are pretty hot, 44 for the older one (root...

Dead Hard Drive? by
wtw
Surprise of surprises. My main hd is giving me the black screen routine. It
wants me to slip in a disk to boot up. What I disk? I tried my install CD,
but I don't think that's the story.
In any case,I took out the hd and put it into another machine. It was not
detected. However, I'm not...

Custom IDE 80 conductor cable at reasonable price? by
ken
I have an unusual setup from PC Power that I purchased a number of years
ago; it is about 18" square and 1 1/2" thick, allowing it to be
vertically mounted in the footwell of a desk. I would like to add a
second hdd; as it will be side-by-side with
the primary drive, and close to the mb...

connecting, but not simultaneously using, many drives by
no name
Hi csiphs,
I read a post somewhere else. The poster asked:
"I have a dozen HDDs that I keep in mobile racks and switch as needed.
I only need them one at a time, not all together, and I don't want to
move them physically or manually reconnect them. Is there any kind of
external container where I...

dynanic vs basic disks by
[email protected]
As part of my work on copying files from a laptop, i tangentially came
across the topic of dynamic vs basic disks.
I am looking for some validation/verification of the following:
From my reading, it seems that basic disks are more "portable" (i.e.
recognized by more OSs and usable in more...

3-high SATA disk enclosures; Any comments ? by
Al Dykes
I'm looking at these disk enclosures and trying to decide which to
get. I like big fans but I've heard complaints that the ICY fan
(80MM) is loud. OTOH, I dislike tiny fans and would want to hook up
fan-failure or over-temp alarms if I get the KINGWIN.
KINGWIN KF-3000-BK 3.5" Internal hot swap...

Earlier this year I formatted and rewrote win xp but for some reason the

cd would not recognize and I never could find a good way resolve it.
I recently did a fdisk on the mbr and ended up having to a xp repair which...

Data recovery without partition table, FAT and directory table? by
Peter Frank
Hi,
Is it possible to recover data from an HDD without having access to a
readable partition table, FAT and directory table?
Well, the reason I ask this is not because all of these are damaged on
my HDD but there is a software that encrypts all of these and I would
like to know whether this...

copying files off of SATA Laptop Drive by
[email protected]
My son's Dell Studio 17 won't boot after a recent vista upgrade. the
suggestion is to use the recovery dvd, which will wipe out his data
files (no, he did not back them up..different topic). It appears to
be a s/w issue not a hardware defect issue.
I see from Dells' website that the studios use...
