Buffalo LinkStation - how noisy? by
Tom Anderson[_2_]
Hi,
I want to get a NAS. The Buffalo LinkStations look good. However, i want
to put it in my living room (where the router is); that means it has to be
compatible with other living room activity, such as watching DVDs,
listening to music, and having romantic candlelit dinners.
So, how noisy...

Mirror on Windows 2003 server setup by
steve
I have added a second scsi drive to my 2003 server.
When I run the msconfig, click on boot.ini tab and then click on
"Check all Boot Paths" it indicates that the line starting with
"signature... " (see below) is not valid. I believe there was some
monkey business with a previous admin that tried...

Problems reading my new burned DVD+RWs by
Ant
Hello.
I burned my first DVD+RW (Office Depot brand) with Nero Express
Essentials SE v8.3.13.0 in an updated Windows XP Pro. SP3. I
successfully burned a huge 166 MB file to it and let it open for future
multisessions (why waste all that for future burns?).
On the same Windows XP Pro. SP3...

Problem after moving SATA from USB to mobo by
Dan[_14_]
I have a Samsung 750 GB hard drive which I attached from outside my
system using a USB port and with separate power. I went into
WinXP/SP2.
Later I tried to attach that drive direct to the mainboard but it
couldn't be recognized.
Does XP mark the MBR of a drive used thru the USB port to say...

Laser by

A laser is a device that emits light (electromagnetic radiation)
through a process called stimulated emission. The term "laser" is an
acronym for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of

image copying drive through USB? by
Yousuf Khan
I usually transfer boot disk images using BootItNG. Those of you who
know BING, it is a utility that boots up with its own CD boot disk. This
is usually not a problem with my desktops, with plenty of drive bays and
multiple connector cables available. But now I want to transfer my
laptop boot...

512GB 2.5" SSD drive? That ought to hold you for a while. Bet it
has a big price tag, too.
I'm waiting for some reliability studies on SSD. ...

Pioneer DVR-212DD or Sony/NEC (AD-7220S-0B or AD-7200S-0B)? by
Ant
Hi all.
I am debating on which SATA DVD+CD burner to get for my next computer
upgrade. I am still using my old Plextor CD burner and it is time to
retire it and go DVD! Which one would you pick -- PioneerDVR-212DD or
Sony/NEC (AD-7220S-0B or AD-7200S-0B)? They cost about 30 bucks.
I will be...

Defragmentation software for Windows XP? by

I am aware that there has been lots of debate as to whether defragging
is necessary, but if one chooses to use such software, what is the
latest and greatest in the defrag software wars?
Thanks

Thumb drive with weird partition by
JimR
At my computer club meeting, we got 512 MB thumb drive handouts from
Microsoft. It included 2 partitions, one of 415 MB with normal write
capability, but the other is 74 MB that is filled with read-only
Microsoft marketing propaganda that tells me why I want Vista. I'd
really like to get that...

WD, Seagate Lack of USB drive specs by
[email protected]
What's with these companies when it comes to providing spec
information about their USB drives? Would you believe Seagate doesn't
tell you how their External USB drives are powered or what the drive
data rates are? WD does tell how they are powered, but again no drive
data rates. What's worse,...

Trying to fix my friend's computer's boot up remotely... by
Ant
Hi.
Any ideas on why my friend is getting errors when he boots his old Dell
Dimension 2350 computer up? It seems like his CMOS sees the Maxtor HDD.
Did his HDD go bust? I told him to take photographs with his digital
camera and send me the pictures:...

A 4 port or more USB hub that you can connect to more than one computer so
that you can share external HDDs, printers etc. that has a switch like some
KVMs do? Seems like a no brainer invention to me but I can't find any such
device for sale. I have a KVM that has an extra USB port and I am able...

Why just JBOD/RAID 0 for enclosure? by
no name
I've been looking for drive enclosures that have a network connection.
I saw one that was cheap, and would allow two drives BUT: It would only
allow JBOD.
Why would a manf do this? What's the point? Why wouldn't they allow
"nothing" or "JBOD" or "raid 1"?

up again in the DOS "Your computer did not shut down...
