To AMD or not to AMD? by
Stephan Rose
Well my PSU and motherboard fried today so...I need to build a new
computer this upcoming week.
I've always used Intel in the past but I am considering to give AMD a
try just for the fun of it and see what all the hype is about.
Thing is, I have absolutely zero experience with AMD so I can't...

Best thermal paste? by
Wes Newell
On Sep. 1, 2005 I replaced my normal HSF thermal compound with some 30
year old wheel bearing grease that I had in the garage. Afterwards the
temps were the same as the original thermal compound. Today they are still
as good are maybe .5C better. AMD64 3000+
CPU Temp: +31°C

Core 2 Duo - can I tell the difference by
Merrill P. L. Worthington
Being an average computer user and not a heavy gamer (only MS Flight Sim
2004 and soon X-Plane), will I be able to notice much of a difference
between my current Athlon 64 3700 (1gb CAS2 RAM) and 3800 machines (2gb
CAS2 RAM)?

AMD64-based laptops from HP/Compaq are crippled by
alex goldman
I've been researching my next laptop purchase, and whether it will run
Linux, and completely accidentally stumbled upon an alarming issue that
people need to be more aware about.
Apparently (and if my understanding is correct), HP/Compaq disables
dual-channel memory access in Socket 939...

Pretty Good Experience Building New PC by
Steven O.
Hi, all. Since there are postings here all the time with questions
about what kind of system to put together, I thought I'd share my
pretty good experience. After tons of research, I realized I had no
idea exactly which parts to buy, so I went to a local computer store,
MicroCenter, and worked...

Tilera to Introduce 64-Core Processor
By Andy Patrizio
An MIT-inspired startup will introduce a new multi-core chip today at
the annual Hot Chips conference at Stanford University. The TILE64
boasts a "clean sheet" design, unencumbered by any legacy
compatibility concerns, that Tilera says will...

AMD for numerics - hype or not? by
alex goldman
AMD marks its processors with with numbers like 4000+ in addition to the
clock rate. I believe the number is supposed to mean how fast it is
relative to Intel chips, i.e. a 3200+ AMD chip should be as fast as a
3.2Ghz P4.
I was wondering if this is true for numerics, especially its holy...

Intel guy looking the AMD direction for the first time. by
No spam
Hello everyone. I am looking to buy a new desktop PC. I currently have
a Compaq Pentium 3 733 MHz desktop and a Dell 2.0 GHz Celeron laptop.
I have always been a fan of Intel... mainly because when I got into
computers there was no AMD. My first IBM based PC was an 8088 with
640k RAM and a 21...

WPA in Longhorn, but not in WinXP 64 Extended... by
Pon Fart
Everyone knows that Longhorn is more than a year off, maybe 2. But WinXP 64
Extended edition is supposed to be released this year.
However, the Longhorn Beta of Longhorn, build 4074 has WPA (Windows Product
Activation), but neither XP 64 or XP 64 2003 Server for the AMD has WPA.
Further more,...

How to slow down CPU, and also get memory up to speed? by
Steven O.
I know almost everyone out there wants to make their CPU faster, but
I'd rather slow mine down just a tad - less stress on the system, less
worry about failure. I just built a new system with the ASUS A8N-SLI
series motherboard.
The CPU is an AMD Athlon 3500+, which is supposed to run at 2200...

XP 3500 socket 939 high cpu temps? by
Don Burnette
I just completed upgrading to an Athlon 3500 90nm winchester core, with an
MSI Neo2 Platinum mb this past weekend.
I got the oem processor, along with a Thermalrite XP90 heatsink, with a 80mm
( i think) fan.
I used Arctic Silver 3.
My cpu temp as reported by corecenter, and in the bios, idles...

Video Card by
Merrill P. L. Worthington
I'm building a computer for my wife. Because of some of the CAD work
she does, its necessary to use a video card with accurate color
rendering. The build will use an ASUS A8N-VM CSM (939 board) with
on-board video. I know from first hand experience that the color is not
all that accurate,...

General Schvantzkoph - future best CPU by

Hi General, I've been reading your posts on different groups about the
performance of current CPU chips, and you seem to be pretty
knowledgeable.
My current dilemma is shoud I buy now or wait? Currrently a Conroe is
probably the best bet (which your posts have helped convince me of),
even though I...

Overclocking Phemon II 940 by
DaveN
What are safe temps for overclocking this chip? I'm trying to see if I
can knock off a day or two on long 3D renders by overclocking.
Right now it peaks at 64c during the day when the house is warmer.
Thanks!

DDR2 for 64 bit solution? by
Philburg2
My friend was building a new 64-bit rig and he wanted to know what ram to
use. I said he probably needed ddr2, but to my surprise I can't find a
single board that supports it. Are there any 64-bit chipsets that support
ddr 2 yet? If no, when are they coming as I really haven't heard...
