Newbie storage questions... (RAID5, SANs, SCSI) by
David Sworder
Hi,
I'm reading a book that describes how to plan an SQL Server
installation. The book warns that one should never use RAID5 unless the
volume receives less than 10% writes (i.e. 90% reads). Apparently the
performance penalty for data writes is quite high with RAID5 but I'm having
trouble...

Seagate STT20000A - Problems with compression by
David J Edgar

I've got a problem using hardware compression with a Seagate STT20000A IDE
Travan TR-5 tape drive.
I am using the backup program that is native to Windows 2000 Server and
can't get more than 10GB on a tape. These tapes should handle up to 20GB of
data if compressed. I have selected the 'use...

Any better way to wipe data from a HDD? by
Danny Jenkins
I was advised that in addition to fdisking and formating a hard disk
drive I should do the following, then fdisk and format again. Are the
following instructions a sure-fire way of erasing data?
Many thanks.

Data storage survey by
tns1
I am looking for some comparison data for commercially available storage
media/devices. I am mainly interested in comparing real world values for
low capacity ( 300MB) spinning or solid state RW media. Things like
total write cycles, data transfer rates, power use, drive life, media
shelf life....

Anyone surfing this group doing this? If so what do you think about
it? I know of several companies that do and have had extensive

I think it's a good idea if you can build in the availability
initially. OnTap software has huge advantages for...

Hot-swap drive has magnetized rails?? by
Dan Foster
We were looking at a 4 year old hard drive with rails and has an hot-swap
enclosure that it sits in; it plugs into the IBM RS/6000 B50 server.
When the hot-swap modular unit was disassembled, it was discovered that its
rails were magnetized.
What we are curious about is if... this is typical of...
