Battery life of wireless doorbell by
Ziggy
What is the approximate battery life of the receiver of a wire free door
chime?
For the sake of argument, let's say the unit is used very little and the
receiver does not have a light.

On-Board Sound or Sound Card? by
Halmyre[_2_]
I've just bought an Asus motherboard which has on-board sound (SoundMAX ADI
AD1986A). However, I'm scrapping an old PC which has a PCI Creative SB Live
1024 card - would this give a better quality than the on-board sound?

I am about to buy a new system and I am lookinig at an
AMD64 3400+ mainly cos I think it will use a bit less power
than an Intel option.
Am I likely to have any regrets? Are there any issues I should be
aware of.

disabling a computer for security purposes by
Perdition
I'm looking for a method to quickly disable a computer without having
to handle the hardware such as physically removing a heatsink. The
method should be a valid failsafe which can be executed quickly. A
possibility would be through BIOS or a script to disable the heatsink
or something else...

Wi-Fi Ranges by
Neil[_2_]
So, I was at the local sandwich shop last night, and I noticed I was able to
pick up a signal from a local T-Mobile hotspot, which I have an account
with. It was only one bar out of five. But I was able to connect to it and
surf the web without any problems.
I then looked up the hotspots in the...

Is this HD on its way out...? by
Kenneth
Howdy,
About three weeks ago, when I tried to open a file on a 250
gig WD drive, I got the error "The file or directory is
corrupted and unreadable."
Based on what I read about that error, I decided that my
best bet was to re-format the drive.
After the format, I put it back into service, and...

Building a new PC. Any comments on these parts? by
ShadowTek[_5_]
It's time for a new build, and I'd like to keep costs under $400 or
$500. I've made a few selections from NewEgg, and I'll be glad to hear
any comments or suggestions anyone has.
I'll start off by listing what I currently have:
Motherboard: MS-7093 (v1.X) M-ATX Mainboard
It's a micro-ATX socket...

Replace magnetic with optical by
Radium[_2_]
Hi:
Why do hard disc drives use magnetic discs?
Since non-volatile flash RAM chips are not yet feasible for HDD-
substitution, why not replace the magnetic platters with optical ones
that use 400 nm lasers to write, read, erase, and re-write data?
Optical platters using 400 nm lasers would...

Grinding Power Supply? by
PawsForThought
When I first start my computer, there is a grinding/vibrating noise that sounds
like it's coming from the power supply. It's not a constant noise but rather
it comes about every 10 to 15 seconds. Once the computer is warmed up, the
grinding noise goes away. I was hoping it was the case fan so I...

Broken motherboard or CPU? by
[email protected]
I had to remove the water cooling kit from a Socket939 machine but the
CPU came off with the water cooling CPU block because of the sticky
paste while the lever was still down, it looks like the pins are not
broken or bent and fits in again with the old heatsink on top of it.
Result:

Raptor or SCSI - Which is going to perform the best? by
Marc Brown
The question isn't as pointless and rhetorical as it may seem. A
friend of mine can't get over the cool factor of his shiny new
Raptor. I, on the other hand, have been investigating SCSI as my
storage platform of choice. In both cases, gaming is the target
application. In researching SCSI...
