SGI starts making Itanium-based workstations by
Yousuf Khan
http://www.ictworld.co.za/EditorialEdit.asp?EditorialID=20287
No sooner has HP stopped making workstations than SGI has stepped in to make
Itanium workstations. It looks like these workstations are a modification of
their existing Itanium servers, as they are supposedly capable of being...

Does Itanium have any competition? by
John Savard
In a discussion on another newsgroup, it was pointed out to me that the
large die size of the Itanium is justified by other things besides its
large cache.
It is also highly superscalar.
Which leads me to a question.
Is seems to me that the AMD Opteron chips are comparable in performance,
or at...

Performance Monitoring Hardware by
Learner
Hi All,
I was interested in doing some profiling to figure out basic block
execution frequencies and branch biases. This is the typical
information that one would need to do several profile based
optimizations (PBO).
An instrumentation based approach instruments the software to collect
profiling...

Any such thing as Pentium III Celeron? by
Doc
Someone is selling a computer on ebay they're calling a Pentium III Celeron.
Maybe I have a misunderstanding of some issues. I was under the impression
that Pentium and Celeron were 2 different lines of Intel CPU's, the Celeron
being a "lesser" cousin of the Pentium.
If this isn't correct, please...

BIOS update problem with D865GBF system by
Matthew
I have a PC with an Intel D865GBF board and a Pentium IV 2.2GHz CPU, 3 HDDs,
DVD-ROM drive, 512MB RAM. Windows 2000 SP4 is the only OS on it.
I recently downloaded and applied BIOS update P21 to it, where it previously
had P6 in it. The BIOS update seemed to be successful (I heard the PC
speaker...

Hot Prescott by
Guus Ellenkamp
My Prescott CPU gets quite hot I think, above 60 degrees Celcius. Idle it's
around 50-55, but when loaded suddenly temperature could rise to 66 degrees
Celcius. It once went up to 69, which is the maxiumum temperature Intel
gives. Fan stays at around 3000 RPM. I remounted the heatsink, but it...

Upgrade chipset software - yes or no? by
Milhouse Van Houten
It occurred to me that I'm still using the version of the chipset software
(5.0.2.1003 for the 865) that was current when I installed XP last year.
It's up to 6.0.1.1002 now, and even after reading the readme's, I can't get
any sense if it's safe or desirable to update to the current version.
Does...

REP instructions and TLB caching by

Could anyone tell whether REP prefix affects in any way the management
of TLB ? I mean, while the loop is being executed does the CPU stores
each new page information in the TLB ?

intel compatibility and open architecture by
Bob
Is intel's microprocessor architecture open one?
If not How come cyrix and via and amd make their processor
*compatible* with the intel microprocessor and moreover market them
with an adjective "compatible with intel"?
don't intel take objection to that?
greetings,
Bob

Building a Computer by
PikeDemon
Looking to build my own system and seeking opinions on what are the
best components (motherboard, etc.) to use on a mid-range performing
system. Not interested in using it for high performace gaming and the
like. But would like to put together a P4 system, 800 MHz bus, etc.
Any thoughts?
