Which power suply output opens/closes the DVD drive door? by John Doe
Anybody know which power suply output powers the DVD drive door? I recently tried increasing the CPU multiplier on my main system and the system died. First, I suspected the BIOS was flashed wrong... But, prior to this problem, the DVD drive door was not properly closing, it had to be push...

Win7 compatibility assistant by shegeek72[_2_]
Been using Win7 for about a month and am so far pleased. If you are running XP and are on the fence about Win7, particularly your older programs, it has a cool compatibility assistant. How it works is you right-click on the exe file of the program in question (Ex: Program...

The ultimate monitor hang by John Doe
Over the course of many years, I have designed several different computer areas for personal use. The first monitor stand for lying down was like a typical monitor sitting on its stand on a desktop, it was supported from underneath. Did not take long to realize that was a bad idea, so I went to...

conventional memory replacement by cisz
Recently, our ethernet card came slightly loose, (it's a card for a tower that's in a smaller computer and can't be screwed in). I mistakenly tried to push it back in without turning off the computer and it seems to have blown some of the conventional memory because we're now getting a message...

Standby by Jure Sah[_2_]
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hello, Here's a simple question: Do you trust standby on your desktop? I have never used it, but pondering on using it on my HTPC. It seems attractive using it instead of power-off (it's faster than my TV coming out of standby, while booting on the...

(Probably a rehash of the same old story...) Power slurpee size? by nobody >[_2_]
I'm doing a new build 'pooter with some new stuff and some stuff that's been kicking around. The intent is decent performance but *quiet*, cool, and reasonably cheap. Most of my use will be "light load". I no longer "chase the Holy Grail of Maximum Frame Rates", I can't twitch fast enough for...

OT Expect skyhigh computer component prices? by John Doe
If we continue spending billions of dollars per month destroying and then rebuilding the Middle East, I do not see how our budget deficit will be restrained. I suspect our leaders will eventually throw up their hands and declare bankruptcy, or just tell China and other of our debt holders to...

power supply meltdown? by internaughtfull
Hi, I have a PC clone of about 7 years, it runs fine. Until tonite when I turned it on and it ran for awhile, then shut off and emitted a strong electrical burn smell. Yay! I love that. If I try to turn it back on, the fans spin up and everything spins up for about 15 seconds, then it turns off...

Two questions about my homebuilt thingy by poachedeggs
I've just assembled my first pc from a bundle I bought and some innards from my last base unit. I wanted to ask about the fan, it's currently installed on the left side of the case, blowing directly over the CPU which has its own fan. Do I really need this case fan? I'm not a gamer, and the pc...

Intel Q9400 or Q9550 for RTS gaming? by John Doe
How much better is the Q9550 over the Q9400 for real-time strategy (RTS) gaming? I suppose they both have the same heatsink/fan since both are 95 watts. The 9400 has half of the cache, but is a newer design? I will look around for comparison charts too, but I have trouble believing commercial...

I have a stick of Samsung memory and the sticker on the memory clearly says 512MB DDR PC2100 but when I install it in my friend's Dell I am working on it only shows up as 256... I've ran Memtest and it reports no errors and this memory checks out for the Dell according to Crucial's website......

Printer being seen as a mass storage device by TVeblen
I recently bought and installed an Epson Artisan 810 printer via USB cable to my box: Asus P6T MB, Bios 0904. The BIOS is reading the printer as a mass storage device. When I boot into Windows, the printer is using a disk drive 'slot'. It shows up in Device Manager under "Portable Devices" and...

Booting with a Thumbdrive plugged in? by Davej
Anyone know why my XP machine would boot slowly when I have an old 256mb thumbdrive plugged into the USB port? I don't understand what the issue is. The thumbdrive is nearly empty and has been formatted to FAT.It works just fine when I plug it into the PC after it has booted.
