Setting up new USB drive by
[email protected]
I have a new Samsung PATA 160G drive that I'd like to use as a USB
storage/backup drive.
I thought I might be able to just plug it into a USB and away we go,
but no dice.
It seems that it must be partitioned and formatted before I can use it
as a USB drive.
Can someone please give me some tips...

drivers, choose partition etc, XP starts to install. Gets as far as
the first reboot - then it can't see the drive anymore ! Anyone seen
this behaviour...

Slow SCSI RAID5 Array... by
NewMan
Hi,
I have a Dell 1600SC running Win2000 Server. This box has a PERC4/SC
RAID Card, and 3 x 73 GB SCSI 10,000 RPM drives configured for
Hardware RAID5.
When this server was originally deployed some 3 years ago, it was a
screamer. No complaints about disk access at all.
A few months ago,...

USB flashdrive not drawing power? by
[email protected]
Hi, I've got a USB pen drive that has decided to stop working - it's
not being recognised by the computer and apparently has stopped
drawing power (light doesn't go on). It's got a lot of important stuff
on it - does anyone know of a way I can extract these documents or
does it sound like the drive...

Partitions --- installing Linux + Vista by

Hope the subject is on-topic for this NG...
I just irreversibly screwed up my Windows Vista notebook while
attempting to install it in dual-boot mode --- Ubuntu Linux + its
Vista.
After screwing it up, I found out that I should have resized the
partition from within Vista's own Disk Management...

Worth writing zeros to my used hard drives? by
Jax
Home user with XP Pro.
I bought some 160 GB hard drives a couple of years ago and they got
filled up with data.
I have now migrated all the data off these 160 GB hard drives and will
now use the drives to hold backups.
QUESTION --- As the HDDs are now empty is it worth writing zeros,
before...

Failure of brand new drive... possibly due to staggered spinup? by
Dan Lenski
Hi all,
I've just experienced a mystifying failure of a hard disk that was
literally only one day old. It is a Hitachi Travelstar 5K160 (80gb
5400RPM SATA) that came with my new Dell laptop. I had installed
Ubuntu Feisty Linux, and everything seemed to be working fine, and I
even checked the...
