RAID stripe sizes. by
Benno...
Hello,
I'm about to reconfigure the disks on some of our servers and I was
wondering if anything can be gained (performance wise) by choosing none
default RAID stripe sizes.
The servers are Compaq ML370's with SmartArray 5300 controllers. Two of
them will have have six 36GB drives in RAID5 and...

Tapes? by
Adrian 'Dagurashibanipal' von Bidder
Hi,
I've got the task of implementing a backup solution upcoming - now the
question is: which tape system? Solutions seem to be either LTO or DLT -
are there others in a similar range (100G or so tape capacity)?
Which drives? The do not seem to be too many differencies between the drive
vendors,...

Grrr, hosed partitions... by
Guillaume Dargaud
I _had_ two internal disks with lots of data.
One drive (F:) had one 60Gb NTFS partition and I wanted to change its cluster size.
The other drive (L:) had 11 various linux partitions and one 172Gb FAT32 partition.
So I moved everything from F: to L:
I changed the cluster size on F: and...

researching a "growable" long-term storage solution by
Mikhail Teterin
Hello!
I'm thinking of putting my various CDs, DVDs, digital pictures, backups,
etc. on a large array of disks. Performance is secondary to reliability
and the software or hardware RAID5 will do.
There are two issues, however, which most common RAID5 setups don't seem
to address without...

aix & missing volumes (san migration): aix experts please ? by
Tom Van Overbeke
hi,
i've got a question (on AIX 5.2) :
while migrating some data to a new SAN (from ESS to Symmetrix DMX systems),
we will need to remove a lv copy on disks that will be missing. (because we
will remove the zoning between a hba on the server and the old san, so that
these disks will become...

DVD NAS? by
John Klug
Is their an easy way to operate a DVD burner over gigabit ethernet?
Is there some way short of a PC with a hard drive that would allow the
burner to plug into a network?

Question about Caviar 2340 HDD by
Paul Allen Panks
I have an old Caviar 2340 HDD. It has 341.2 MB of storage, 1010 cyclindes,
and 55 sectors. I'd like to use it as a secondary slave drive, but Windows
XP seems to be having difficulty recognizing the drive. I have even tried
Datalife Guard Tools by Western Digital. It will sometimes recognize...

Greetings. Having found no existing threads on this issue...
I understand RAID. I have used several arrays over the last few years; on
PCI and integrated. When I built this system, I began with a single SATA
drive, but I've since added a second identical drive and mirrored them.

actually making your own floppy diskettes? by
Matthew Montchalin
It may /sound/ crazy, but is it possible to recycle old floppy diskettes
by carefully cutting them up into little pieces and grinding it all up
in an ordinary kitchen "coffee mill?" Then, after it reaches a reasonably
fine consistency, pouring the stuff into a mold and heating it up in an
oven? ...

CompactFlash: PIO Timings vs. MemoryCycle Timings by

When using CompactFlash in memory mapped mode (CommonMemory space), where
are you supposed to get the memory cycle timings from? There don't appear to
be 'MemoryCycle' timings, as there are PIO timings, either in the device
identification or Card Information Structure.
The trouble is that although...
