EMC CX300 SPS Question by
Susan Doucette
Does anyone know if the CX300 requires the Supplemental Power Supply? The
documentation seems to imply that you must have the SPS in order to do write
caching. I understand it provides battery-backed power for cache destaging,
but our datacenter is fully UPS protected so I don't want to waste...

Tape lifetime expectations by
Svenne Krap
Hello.
Can someone come up with some expectations for lifetimes for different
tape solutions (Travan, DAT, DLT, Ultrium) for mission critical data.
That is in different situations:
- tape is written once, put in safe storage
- tape is written multiple times (some sort of rotation in the backup...

DirectBackup of CIFS shares , networking problem by
[email protected]
Background info :
EMC Celerra IP : 10.36.96.217
Backup Server IP : 10.36.96.208
Backup between the two works fine, however has to go through a switch
and drains the main bandwidth available from the Celerra, so what I
have done is directly connected a port on the Celerra via cat6 to
another...

hardware raid 10 over raid 5 by
thomaslally
Disk space is not a concern, performance and above all failover
capacity are more important to us. I've seen plenty of posts about
RAID 5 and RAID 10 (1 + 0)
But, the people (such as silver Dell tech support)I was asking to are
mostly suggesting me to use RAID 5, especially HARDWARE RAID 5 with...

can a NAS that communicates with a DMR run iTunes directly? by
BetteDavisStyle
Say I have the Western Digital 500GB NetCenter, with all my video/audio
etc on it, hooked up to my standard router. Say I have Apple TV hooked
up to my TV.
With this setup I'd still have to be running a PC somewhere for Apple
TV to be streaming music/video because iTunes would be on a PC even...

Question on External RAID Disaster Scenario by
Ernest Siu
The question is on the role of host cache during disaster with SAN.
Let's assume a simple setup with a host connecting to an external RAID
box. An application write data, host put them on it's page cache and
tells the application that it's done, and so application carries on.
While the dirty data...

[email protected]
Hi,
How long would it take (on a decent NAS filer) to read the meta data
for 300TB of data via NFS?
I know the answer varys for different vendors, but im just looking for
a ballpark... Assuming average file size of 1MB, which is the case in
my environment, I estimate I have about 300 million...

Problems With IBM LTO-TDX Firmware Upgrade Tool by
Will
I am trying to upgrade an IBM LTO2 tape drive from a firmware revision in
the 3000 series to 53Y3 using the IBM LTO-TDX tool under Windows.
First, is this utility still IBM's state of the art for firmware upgrades?
The UI and error checking look to be about 1987 quality software. ...

Number of drives per RAID controller channel (Ultra320)? by
Benno
Is there anything to say about the maximum number of drives you should
connect to a Ultra320 channel on a RAID controller (for a single RAID5 set)?
Modern Ultra320 10.000RPM drives have a throughput between 59 and
118MB/s (according to Seagate datasheets). Does this mean you can only
have 3 to 5...
