Power supply cable standards. by Al Drake
Are these cables used on modular power supplies the same among all brands? If I have a cable that delivers 12 volts to my HDDs that came with one brand can I assume it will be wired the same and can be used on other brands? I would guess the answer is yes. I have several boxes with extras I...

soft-power on now hard on by [email protected]
I have a PC with P6T "deluxe V2" mobo. Forby I turn it on at wall socket and I hear it come to life without pressing power button. Then when I shutdown from operating system, it does and screen goes blank, but the fans keep running. I disconnected power button from mobo, methinks it were shorted,...

Short on my metal case (ouch) by RayLopez99
There's something wrong with the pushbutton ON/OFF power button on the 4 year old Asus i5 socket mobo tower system, which has a new power supply 600W "Iceman" brand. The local repair guy here in the Philippines tried soldering the pushbutton, and it worked for a while, until it malfunctioned again...

SATA Shuffle by Seymore4Head
I have a ASUS M4A785TD-M EVO mobo and 5 drives. The SATA ports are marked SATA1, SATA2, SATA3, SATA5, SATA6. (I love computer counting) Port 1 is a single port. 2-3 are paired and 5-6 are paired. For some reason the mobo looses the boot drive. Since I log on to the computer remotely, I don't have...

Perils of floating ground (no ground) on your PC...what are they? by RayLopez99
Inspired by my other post (where BTW my mobo has now failed) and the below blurb by Paul from another thread, I wonder what are the perils of floating ground, that is, no ground at all? I notice there is no ground wire here in southeast Asia (I guess you could build one, and I hope hospital...

Skybuck's PC for 2015/2016. (inquiry) by Skybuck Flying[_4_]
Hello, As some of you know I promised myself a new PC for 2016. Maybe it was going to be an ARM thing or something.... However I do like the idea of owning a processor with my name in it: "Skylake" processor :) I did have a verbal fight once with somebody called "Lake" lol... but I can get...

dead USB ports too frequent for my liking by [email protected]
I have had 20 PCs since USB came out, and at least half of them had 1 dead USB port after a while. In only one case could I see bent contacts in the socket. So I wonder is this the usual problem, or do the USB chips get zapped? I presume the sockets 5 V pins are fed from a common rail, so it would...

Who uses Raspberry Pi for a P2P machine? by Seymore4Head
My P2P machine is loud. I haven't read much about the Raspberry Pi, but I was thinking that I might get one just to see if it would run SABnzbd and TeamViewer. Maybe buy a 2G hard drive. Is there an Winmx open nap program for Linux? If it did that well enough, maybe buy a modem for it and try to...

Anyone ever fix a bad motherboard? by Al Drake
I have an Enterprise security DVR with a bad motherboard and can't find one anywhere. I dropped it off at a local Mom and Pop computer shop who had it for 6 months but couldn't find a replacement. I was thinking of trying to find the bad component. Has anyone ever been successful at doing...

Sapphire graphics useless user manuals by [email protected]
I have a PC with Sapphire HD4980 therein. When you switch it on, you hear one beep (meaning normal). However, several seconds later, another beep. It seems to be in a reboot loop. Nothing appears on monitor. I open case, and see a red LED flashing on the Sapphire card. There are 3 LEDS just...

Regor weirdness -- When things get weird, Weirdness get going. by Flasherly[_2_]
Three BIOS beeps only 1st time: UnRecognized Processor. So. That's what I'm now running, I guess. A Regor CPU on an unsupported MB. AKA: dualcore Phenom. Clock speed is correct - 3400. Dunno, don't ask me. The multipler @ 200FSB topped out at a BIOS limit of x11 on the Phenom x4 that...

got a free phenom II by Flasherly[_2_]
Damn, somebody just gave me this processor. Almost twice as fast as my current quad phenom (2.2ghz) - only it's not listed on the MB support list (Gigabyte m61pme-s2 ). Damn, I just may have to plug it anyway to be extra sure about that...might be Taiwan documentation is tardy... . Twice as fast...

Gigabyte whacked out on me again by Flasherly[_2_]
AMD Gigabyte MB - thought I'd "cured it" of high temps by lowering the HyperTransport multiplier. Storm yesterday and a few brown-outs, two or three, longest maybe 15 seconds. Nothing unusual in rebooting, except upon noticing Speed Fan's report aggressive high temps. Again. It was rock solid...

Cloning System Drive leaves behind USB Readers by Al Drake
I've been trying to clone a Win7 install on a Samsung SSD but every time I get the same results. Not able to see any USB storage devices. I've tried Macrium Refleck 5.3 (7299), AOMEI Partition Assistant and EZ Gig IV http://www.apricorn.com/products/software/ezgig.html but always the same...
