How not to buy a LiIon by
Flasherly[_2_]
Two "cell-phone" sized batteries. These were "buffered", as are some
Chinese interests, from ready West Coast US of A stock and facilities.
BL-5C is the nomenclature, common class, and the XHDATA I think may
have been augmented with some brandname. I cut off the wrappers,
anyway, taped both...

does H77 chipset (Ivy Bridge) need heat sink? by
[email protected]
I got a used Dell XPS 8500. Trying to find out the motherboard model,
Dell website no help. But I see mainboards for this PC advertised on
various sites. There are 2 different photos in these listings, one has
a heatsink on the chipset, the other does not. The board in this PC has
no heatsink, and...

No demarcation FX-octal woe blues by
Flasherly[_2_]
Bought mine, an octal Fx when the Ryzen fireworks went off, a bomb by
industry standards, at least for octals. I swear to God, they're
getting all teary-eyed about this, people who know better talking
about buying them for the vintage retro-aspect, and such, unresistably
drawn back into a sheer...

Interesting modem MAC ancillary by

Went back to no computer software affiliations or a standalone
hardware telephone device.
The device is for dedicated telephone service, to be used in
conjunction with an ISP modem.
The modem's one Ethernet out is routed into the device, and from the
device looped back into the computer's...

NEWEGG is doing a sum rebated end for $40. Get it? ... AM4 ... $40. I
guess.
The thing actually reads like a dive bomber out of a comic book --
Amazon reviews directly as apparently as well a Google search. Total
Meltdown City.
Kind of gets to me that Newegg would do that: Take a spoon, dip...

RAM temperature sensors needed soon. by
[email protected]
Cryptocoins may start using algorithms which can be executed fast only on CPU-RAM chips.
Problem with this is current hardware has no RAM temperature sensors ?!?!?
Therefore I am requesting this feature to be added to new hardware as soon as possible.
Bye,
Skybuck.

Windows 10 fails to boot, then it reboots, bizarre self-fix by
RayLopez99
I want to report an interesting event in my PC upgrade. Target machine was a Aspire, AMD A6 laptop running Windows 8.1, 32 bit mode, that I upgraded to Windows 10, 64x.
When Windows 10 came out in 2015 or so, I upgraded for free immediately, then, went back to Windows 8.1 but not before backing...

Can I install XP on a Lenovo T410s by

My old Lenovo T43 laptop is getting old and needs help. Battery is weak,
keyboard has a few non-working keys, etc. I was gonna buy a new battery
and replacement keyboard, but I am looking into just getting a newer
Lenovo, I can get a T410s for just a little more than the parts for my
old T43 (which...

cheapest ssd yet seen by

$33 for a 256G. Cheapest presence, rather a Kingston which
specifically means 3-yr domestic US warrantee. Maybe an 800 Kingston
no. with a human to answer. No DRAM buffering, old rebadged Toshiba
memory, old Pison controller. Material is total bottom of the barrel.

faarghk - I hate notebooks by
[email protected]
A relative showed me a notebook: they had tried to remove the hard disk,
but had lifted the end more than necessary and busted the SATA connector.
It was not repairable. Then I vaguely recalled Toshiba made a premium
model with 2 hard drives. I removed another cover and there was a void the
size...

Didn't do so spectacularly great with x4 Phenom II by

Not on wiser averages, to base my choice of purchase, although fresh
into it being closer to there wasn't time for a more informed choice.
Low-cost dollar, including the Chinese/Asian market is around a third
less than I paid.

WinSetupFromUSB & New BIOS by
Flasherly[_2_]
Didn't notice anything with HIRENs & WinSetupFromUSB, but went to
install a Win7 ISO and the USB manager kicked into a second proviso to
access a BIOS id on USB-HDD -- something about the BIOS reporting it
for a Floppy. Also never encoutered that on the other MBs, (always
the first), just this new...

why different BIOS for Windows and Linux? by
[email protected]
I got a mainboard out of an Acer X3995, I wished to recycle.
First had to figure out the pins for the front panel switch and LEDs.
Going to Acer website, they have 4 BIOS to download:
2 for Win8, 1 for Win7 and 1 for linux.
Why so? I don't think other manufacturers specify a restrictive BIOS.

USB stick that's bootable has TWO names by
RayLopez99
You know what I mean. The boot sector on the USB, which was formatted with "Rufus" freeware to make it bootable, is tiny, a few hundred kB, but has a name. Then the main USB, which is large, say 15 GB, has another name. Reformatting each USB will wipe them clean, but how do you 'combine' them...

SSD and sleep mode? by
Mike[_33_]
I got this email today claiming that sleep mode is hard on a SSD.
I could understand that hibernate is hard on a SSD, but sleep mode?
My system sleeps maybe a dozen times a day. It's asleep 90% of the time.
Save the planet and all...
Is there any truth to this? Or is it just a scare tactic...
