General Question to RAID 5 by
Krausse Martin
Hello, I'm a new user of this newsgroup.
How can tell me, how a RAID 5 knows, that a hard disk drive is
or goes failure? Because, to recover Data with parity checksum, you
must know, what number of hdd is failure!
I don't find any useful information in the www.
Does a RAID System checks the SMART...

how to calculate tape-capacity ? by
[email protected]
Hello,
are there some guidelines available how to calculate
the capacity of a tape drive?
(I understand that a large tape-capacity means fewer tape
changes, lower administrative overhead, and fewer operator errors)
Any tip is appreciated very much. Thank you!

DDS 1-4 drive question by
Rick
This should be an obvious question. But I couldn't find an obvious
answer to it searching the net.
During backups, do DDS 1-4 tape drives compare & verify data as they
write to the tape? (As opposed to Travan drives which can't do that and
require a separate compare pass after the backup is...

EMC vs Netapp NAS by
[email protected]
Hi,
I have some experience with EMC's Celerra product and some exposure to
Netapp filers but not really enough to speak to the technical
advantages of one compared with the other. At first glance Netapp seems
to offer a superior product but at a premium price.
Could anyone provide an overview of...

My company recently acquired an IBM DS300 SAN, and a number of IBM

not sure). Using a HP ProCurve 2824 which was marketed at having Jumbo
frame support. I'm using out of the box settings for the time being,
and the performance is...

Tape lifetime expectations by
Svenne Krap
Hello.
Can someone come up with some expectations for lifetimes for different
tape solutions (Travan, DAT, DLT, Ultrium) for mission critical data.
That is in different situations:
- tape is written once, put in safe storage
- tape is written multiple times (some sort of rotation in the backup...

Zone Changes on MDS9120 take a while to change active zoneset by
SteveO
Whenever I make a change to zones on my MDS9120 it takes a long time to
change the active zoneset. Since I haven't had formal training yet I
may be missing a step.
1.) Add new zone
2.) Add members to zone
3.) add zone(s) to zoneset
4.) zone commit force
A sh zones shows the changes but sh active...
