huge box of ram? by Paul Rubin
Is there such a thing as a relatively inexpensive box (up to a few K$, say) that can hold a huge amount of ram, like 200-1000 GB? It doesn't have to be battery backed or anything like that, but it should have ECC or at least parity. The application is a high traffic database cache.

While using the webtools interface on our IBM 2005-H15 (equivalent Silkworm 3850) SAN switch, the web pages seemed to lock up. Following this there was no network connectivity available to the switch. No webtools, no command line interface via telnet, and even no ping replys. The switch is still...

Thecus N2100 NAS storage options by [email protected]
This is a NAS that comes with no hard drives. You add your own SATA drives. It has USB to support storage expansion to an externa USB hard drive. Does anyone know if it can be used with an external USB drive as the ONLY drive? I have a large IDE drive in a USB enclosure, so I'd rather not have...

How to "Unlock" a drive from 3Ware 9500S array? by Steve Cousins
A SATA drive (Western Digital 2500SD) from a 3Ware 9500S array went offline and was replaced by a hot-spare. I pulled the "bad" drive and put it in a machine with a basic Promise SATA controller and booted up Western Digital's diagnostic program to test the drive. The DLGDIAG program reported...

options for writing to multiple locations by anon
what sort of options are there for a setup where systems write to a single CIFS hostname\share but it actually goes to two separate storage repositories? i don't want replication, but actual independent writes, and i'm wondering if there is some sort of hardware box that would handle that?

Attaching IBM 3592 tape drives to a SAN by Nicholas Buckley
Hi everyone, Here's the deal: Although we're reasonably mature SAN users ( EMC storage, EMC (Brocade) Directors, IBM pSeries AIX servers ), attaching tape to our SAN is altogether new for us. In case you're not familiar, the 3592 uses native 4Gb fibre channel connectivity ( 2 ports - and hence...
